I've always been told (and read on the State Election Board site) that Oklahoma is a closed primary state, and therefore you can't vote in another party's primary. Am I misinformed? Or do your local candidates all come from the same party like mine?
Its to keep the voters that are not registered as you say in the party from voting in the primary. Thus many folks will declare a party to get to vote in local primaries, here in SE ok, thats the olny way you get to useally vote for local offices as this is Yellow dog country, thus who ever wins the democratic primary for most county offices is the winner(no parties in the city offices here I believe)

There have been instances of primary jummping to elect a less popular and viable canidate if the party doing it has only one canidate running, thus its race is already decided.

I just cannot bring my self to register as a democrat, thus have very little say in my local races.

First, I'm registered republican and vote republican because out of my choices, they are usually the one that has the best chance of winning. That being said...

Democrat. I agree with many above: I am not a fan of the two party system. I would also like to see many viable and distinctive parties.

I too can agree with this statement, but...My only concern, say you have 5 presidential candidates, one gets elected with 20 percent of the votes, then basically, those 20 percent are speaking for the other 80, sure if he a constitutionalist that is great, but what if he is socialist?

Exactly Street Rat. The 2 Party system has its faults, but as I have mentioned in another thread, Israel and England (both of which have a multitude of political parties) experience just as much political gridlock as we do, if not more.

What we really need to do is get people in this country to actually care about politics. More people in this country care about American Idol than the current political situation.

The more I talk to people about politics the happier I am that most of them don't take the time to vote. Its not that they may disagree with me, but that they are totally ignorant of the history of our Government.

I have even had teachers tell me that the Constitution is a malable document meant to be interpreted as the times change. When I point out that a tool called the Amedment process was put in place for just that they tell me that it is to difficult so we can't use it.

Republican. I used to vote the person when I thought their ideals closely matched mine regardless of party. The main reason I am a Republican is because the Democratic party chooses to try and disarm us at every turn. We are fortunate here in Oklahoma to have Senators and Representatives for the most part that are Pro-Gun regardless of party.
The next few years will be a trial to see how many of our gun rights are taken away.
Sorry about the rant. I am a one issue voter and that is gun control, don't want it and cannot understand why anyone would vote in someone that is for it.

Good post .45Lover.

As to understanding why people would vote for politicians that are pro-gun control, you actually laid out the case already. Many people are not one-issue voters (like myself) and will sometimes vote for politicians who disagree with us on the gun issue because of their activism in other areas.

As for myself, I am very pro-gun but I consider other things more important at this particular time. I can definitely understand why other voters consider the gun issue to be the most important to them, however.
