So, although the Prius and other hybreds sip gas, what is the cost/ consumption of electricity?
Thread derail.....

Internal combustion engines are hilariously inefficient, and generating power for a bunch of people in once place (like in an electrical power plant) lets you take advantage of economies of scale.

This is why people hate Prius drivers. Yes, we are all jealous of your beige econobox. It shows that you don't care about things like style, speed, or comfort. It shows that you don't care about a car that says "look at me! look at me!", even though you will most definitely run around shouting, "look at me! I drive a Prius!". This is usually done while hypermiling in the fast lane. Pure jealousy.

You mean driving 5MPH under the speed limit in the left lane?

That's not hypermiling. That's just how people drive in Oklahoma.

Well, according to southpark all prius owners are smug and like to smell their own farts. And they think they are saving the enviroment.

I had a professor in undergrad who drove a hybrid and mentioned it at least once every 3 lectures. Drove me BONKERS.

The hate isn't towards the Toyota Prius, the hate is towards Prius drivers. Why? Because of the constant, "I get this far per tank in a car that sucks to drive!" I understand wanting hypermilage from a car, but I prefer to enjoy driving.

This.... I worked for Toyota service for two years, worst job ever! MOST prius owners suck.

I don't drive a Prius but do drive a Nissan Versa. Not 57mpg but more like high 30s on the highway. However, much much much cheaper to get into than a Prius.

As a driver of one, I'll say this. I hate it at times and love it at times. I originally got it when I was blowing through gas driving all over to visit clients. A few years ago I went out on my own and now work from home with half my clients in different states so I don't have a boss yapping at me to drive around and swing doors. Thus, I drive a lot less and mileage is not a big deal for me. What is a big deal is that I can't go hunting in my Versa. When taking a trip, the gas mileage is great but that's not often enough for it to be a big deal. It has no power (my wife and daughters tease me about it), no style, and no functionality other than A to B.

If I was a salesman again and A to B was all that mattered on the best budget it meant the difference in $50 per week in gas or $150 per week in gas, I'd buy it again. However, I can't see any other scenario where the benefit outweighs the sacrifice.

Also, they hold no resale value so I'm freaking upside down in it and can't really even trade it in. Looks like I'll be buying a beater to hunt in and keeping the Versa 'till my daughter turns 16 and she can drive it since she thinks making fun of me in it is so great.

My truck sucks on gas mileage, but I love driving it, so I don't care. I might get a beater down the road that gets better mileage for driving to work and back, but at this point I am not really concerned about it.

Here's something I also never understood about "green" cars. When someone says, "I just bought a new ____ to save on gas!" Ok, so $25K of debt to save $50 a week on gas. Is the $150-200 a month saved on gas worth it for the $300+ car payment every month?

Well, i'm not 16 anymore so sex in the backseat is out and I'm saving for retirement so cost averageing works for me.

Haha - live a little man :D In all seriousness we've got 3 teenagers that we haul around to various sports and what not, so the Prius was out no matter what for us.

On a side note, I am seriously considering some of the smaller more gas-efficient SUV/Crossovers (including some of the hybrids) lately because it seems like 3rd-row-seat equals $#!++y gas-mileage and I'm starting to question the value of being able to take our family of 5 +1 or 2 more if we need to (but getting horrible gas-mileage all the time) over just taking 2 vehicles on those occasions when we need to haul around more than 5 and enjoying better MPGs in the times we don't.

^^^^^^

EXACTLY also, the plug in hybrids aren't even that efficient either. They talk about saving the planet by driving an electrical vehicle, but how do we get electricity in this country? COAL PLANTS! Congratulations, you now drive a coal powered vehicle.
