I know, I was just mentioning those. Sorry, kind've got off topic. As far as the priuses are concerned, they aren't very good for the enviroment either since they take more valuable materials to build them. Also since the batteries are so expensive, it makes them throw away cars once the batteries run out.

My wifes 12 yr old Ls430 was totaled by a 90 yr old lost and disoriented lady so a new car was a must. We didn't go out and buy a car to save the world! You guys are very bright.

I never said you did, but you bought a car to "save" you money at the pump. Otherwise you would've bought another car. There is nothing that I can see a prius doing better than any other car besides mileage.

We got the Prius C which is smaller and cheaper, since the cost of the car bothers some of you!!
With the possibility of layoff coming for me and maybe having to travel, i didn't think it would be smart to buy a more expensive less efficient automobile.
There's no reason why cars should get less than 30 mpg nowdays.
Trucks are another story, but should still get better than 14 mpg.

I never said a more expensive, less efficient vehicle. But I'm talking about used. I don't think I would ever buy a new car. But if you buy a used car that's cheaper and less efficient... Well...

achieving high mpg isn't as easy as you think it is. Automakers have to balance performance, mpg, cost, emissions, and a bunch of other things I probably haven't thought about.

I was referring to mlryan. Sorry bro, not trying to jab here.

Yea my bad. You're entitled to drive what you want. I personally don't think they're all that great. It's kind of like the cash for clunkers idea to me. If you drive a 10 year old car or older that gets 15 mpg with no car payment, how is it better to get a brand new car that gets maybe 20mpg better? Now you have a car payment which you most likely can't afford if you're driving a 10 year old car anyways, and the fuel pump savings aren't going to make up the added costs per month.

You are Correct. Buying a new car wasn't something we wanted to do. When the car got totalled, we just decided to buy a new gas sipper and my wife can drive and not have to worry about gas much.

You went from a 19mpg car that I'm going to assume was paid off to a new prius that was probably 25k? How much do you drive the car a year? Let's say 25000 mi.

25000mi/19mpg = 1315.8ga*$3.55 = $4671 a year to drive your Lexus

25000mi/57mpg = 438.6*$3.55 = $1557 a year to drive your prius

Now, $4671-$1557 = $3114 in savings per year.

$25000/$3114 = 8 years to pay off the extra cost of the prius with no interest added.

But since you had a reason to buy one then it was probably a good decision on your part. A lot of people will trade in a perfectly good vehicle in the interest of "saving money".
