You went from a 19mpg car that I'm going to assume was paid off to a new prius that was probably 25k? How much do you drive the car a year? Let's say 25000 mi.

25000mi/19mpg = 1315.8ga*$3.55 = $4671 a year to drive your Lexus

25000mi/57mpg = 438.6*$3.55 = $1557 a year to drive your prius

Now, $4671-$1557 = $3114 in savings per year.

$25000/$3114 = 8 years to pay off the extra cost of the prius with no interest added.

But since you had a reason to buy one then it was probably a good decision on your part. A lot of people will trade in a perfectly good vehicle in the interest of "saving money".

In defense of saving money by finding a more gas-effecient car, some of us drive to the tune of 700+ mi per week so the savings is significantly more than you'd think. Though we do have to think about longevity vs. fuel mileage as 150-200k miles is a breaking point for a lot of domestic cars (and nowdays - quite a few imports) and maintenance costs can sneak up to kick you right square in the arse while you're busy saving all that money on gas.

I agree with 68mustang though, I don't think I'll ever buy another new car again.

Right now, I'm finding it hard to be anything but a fanboy of used Toyotas (and Lexuses). I don't know that I can drive a Prius, but when it comes to putting 350k miles on your car (to justify the purchase), and you want a balance of fuel economy and low-maintenance costs, there are few choices out there with Toyota rising to the top many times.

Back when Domestic cars were a lot cheaper to work on yourself (or even take somewhere - hell the dealerships were cheaper than import dealerships), I could justify the maintenance costs, but nowdays - I'm finding that that last two domestic cars I bought new are steadily sucking money from my wallet by way of failing parts more so than with bad fuel economy.

I bought the Jeep used and its been a good vehicle, but just isn't practical for our growing family, so it will probably be the last domestic vehicle I owned that had a good reputation the entire time I owned it.

You are correct. We bought the Lexus used and it was paid off. The Prius C we bought cost $17,000.
I bought it after seeing a friend of mine with 2 older ls400's with right at 400,000 miles on both and run like tops.
I just picked up a 99 Camry and it gets 30 mpg.
We drove Hondas for years but as of late they are very hard to find and the mileage of the newer ones goes down and cost more than i want to pay.
We've had 7 Hondas between us.

I think Toyotas are great. I definitely think they are the top automobile manufacturer. But they haven't made a car that I would want to drive since the Toyota Supra. They stick with what they know and make cars that are reliable, but they don't excite me. I would love to have a car that averages 24mpg. But I don't like getting stuck in Oklahoma winters and I like to enjoy what I'm driving. I probably drive the least fuel efficient vehicles on the planet! LOL.

My idiot brother in law did something similiar. He didn't like the gas mileage on his financed Dodge Charger....so he kept the Charger and went out and financed a new motorcycle "for the good mileage". He completely ignored that fact that he now had two vehicle payments and the cost of the motorcycle would've bought a lot of gas for the Charger.

I have a friend that is going through the same thing right now - he wants badly to buy an Infinity G35, but can't bring himself to do so due to reliability (and he doesn't really find anything Toyota makes exciting).

The Lexus SC Coup is pretty awesome - even if it is a middle-age woman's car :) I'm seriously thinking of getting one for the wife.

I don't like many new Toyotas aesthetically. In the early '90s Toyota had one hell of a line up. Tell your friend that the Infiniti G35 in actually a Nissan 350Z, and more than capable of being exciting in the proper hands. :)

I have to admit that even though I love my Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles, I don't think they're as reliable or durable as my WRX was. At nearly 90K, it was as solid and my 4Runner was at 30K. It got routinely thrashed for the first 40K of it's life, which makes that feat even more impressive. One thing's for sure, what it lacked in luxury was made up for in excitement! :)
