I couldn't care less about the car itself, it's the drivers that give the car a bad name. I've seen Prius drivers (primarily) causing rolling traffic jams while hypermiling. You think you're saving the planet when all the other vehicles around you are hitting the brakes and then speeding off when they finally get around you? Feel free to get your 57 MPG, but please don't do it at the expense of everyone else you share the road with. :rolleyes2

Kinda like OU fans, until the car, or team, breaks.:D

Have you looked into how much a battery maintenance issue could cost you after the warranty runs out? It won't take long to reach 100K. I've been curious about that aspect of these hybrids...flat out replacement has got to be expensive too.
I've been following the technology and couple of years now and have taken classes on these types of cars as part of my job. 2012 is a new design and the life expectancy was increased as well as the future replacement should be cheaper than the older style batteries. Currently, the batteries run about $1500-1800 as long as you don't buy directly from the manufacturer at MSRP. As the stuff improves, the cost has been dropping and performance has been increasing. I honestly am not confident that it will gain us anything savings wise. But I think it's close enough now that I won't lose anything. I was more curious about the technology than interested in being green. About the time we break even and it pays for itself is about the time we'll trade it in.

You are correct. We bought the Lexus used and it was paid off. The Prius C we bought cost $17,000.
I bought it after seeing a friend of mine with 2 older ls400's with right at 400,000 miles on both and run like tops.
I just picked up a 99 Camry and it gets 30 mpg.
We drove Hondas for years but as of late they are very hard to find and the mileage of the newer ones goes down and cost more than i want to pay.
We've had 7 Hondas between us.

I just picked up an 05 Civic LX. Has some miles on it but still has plenty of life left in it. Gets 36.5. I'm down with that.

No doubt. The Toyota FR-S is somewhat interesting, but it lacks too much to make it appealing to me. I would seriously DD an MX-5 hardtop if I could convince myself a ******* 2-seater roadster was practical for my uses. Anybody who makes a trite chick car joke about a Miata knows **** about crap, namely driving.

I've about 99.9% decided my next DD is going to be a Legacy GT. I think they would be a great combo between awesome fun a practicality. Sheet, they even quit making them in a manual this year. Pathetic. You guys are making me want one NOW. I'm in the process of trying to move and can't do it for a while. :(
What a balless society we've become as Americans. Every car company should make a cheap, no-frills car that is actually fun to drive. The few that still do are quickly pussifying them. You won't be able to buy *anything* with three pedals and a blue-collar income in 10 years. Lame.

GTG, I still have faith in Toyoda. I've got 150K on my second gen 4WD Taco and I've done things to that poor truck that a traveling businessman wouldn't do to a Thai hooker. Ask anyone who's been down a forest road with me; I've shocked a few people who didn't realize how far 33's and willpower can get you. :D Still solid as a rock and 0 problems. It's decidedly more pussified than oh say, an FJ60 or a Hilux, tho. And it is about as boring to drive as a vehicle gets (on the road).

Sig line material right there.

Peanut saw you got a Prius C.

1. How did you get your wife to go from a lexus to the cheapest prius available?

2. Consumer Reports tried to warn you. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505145_162-57488986/5-new-cars-to-avoid-consumer-reports/

3. If you want MPGs then buy one of these. High MPG and an actual car with luxury features. http://www.vw.com/en/models/passat/gallery.html

Cardsfan - + 1 on Mazda's. Just traded in the wife's CX-9 for a new Ram Laramie. Good car, just too much gravel in our lifestyle. People over look Mazda for some reason and they have some good stuff that is practical and not boring.

Sidenote: CX-9 MPG was 19-20 and so far the Ram has been 15-16. Not too bad a hit especially when you consider we went from 273 HP to 390 HP!!!

I move to revoke your man card. Can I get a second?

Heh.

I'd argue that the Mazda is no less manly then the anemic V6 Dodge Dakota 4x4 I traded in for it :D I am actually recalling the towing capacity is 2000 versus only 3500 on my Dakota. The mileage improved from 15 to 28+. The Dodge didn't even have a tilt wheel, it was such a stripped version. The Mazda is much quieter and smoother, and has cruise for our regular trips to St Louis to visit family.

Really thought the Mazda is for the wife, not me. I lost my truck but I did get my Jeep back from the wife, so I'm still in a 4x4 for now. And it gets 17 mpg or so, and has some interior cargo space. It was my first new car I bought new, and she'd driven it the last 4 years. I'm glad to have it back.

Good car, just too much gravel in our lifestyle.

We were seeing the opposite lifestyle - less gravel in our life than we used to see. As much as I liked a truck, we didn't need two 4x4s so away one went to make room for a more civilized ride. The truck would probably have been the practical choice, but I was attached to my Jeep. I'll buy and build up a 40x48 trailer and get back a box about the size I lost with the Dodge being traded.

Sadly, they aren't as reliable in newer year models and finding an older one that doesn't look to be owned by a kid (or someone who loves to abuse cars) is getting to be pretty difficult.

Add into that the fact that very few shops will touch a Subaru Boxter engine (compared to other imports/domestics - including available dealerships in OK), and all that fun starts to cost you some pretty serious money.

I wish they would never have changed the formula when they got it perfect. I wish Mazda would have released a Speed3 in sedan (and AWD), and I wish the RX8 was actually a reliable platform for a daily-driver.

I opted for a S-grand touring Mazda3 over the Speed3 they had on the lot (within $2k of the same price back when i bought mine, but the interior of the S-Grand Touring was way nicer than the Speed3 was and it rode about 10x smoother (and I find that the older I get, I tend to prefer comfort over sporty).

Still have a soft-spot for the Mazdas, but I'm starting to think used Lexuses are the best deals in used-cars.

Exactly why I sold the WRX and got the 08' GS460. It's still plenty fun to drive (though not as fun as the Rex) it's very quiet & comfortable and the Mark Levinson system OWNS the stodgy old Subie sound system! To be brutally honest, I could be persuaded to own a Ford again, but only if they offered the Euro spec Focus RS in AWD. They should have their heads examined for not having it on the U.S menu!

Oh my 02' 4Runner will be staying with us till it croaks or I do, and I'm not willing to bet on which one will go first! I've test driven the Gen 4 & 5 4Runners and I don't think they're nearly as good as the 96-02 Gen 3's. I was very concerned that it wouldn't make a decent tow vehicle when I got my boat, but it's performed far better than the engine specs would suggest. They may be boring on routine days, but they can be fun at times! :)
