More expensive is only relative to what .223 uppers you are talking about.
Both my 18" and 16" uppers are twice the cost of the 9mm uppers. Now add the cost of the mag block and you are still looking at ~75% of the cost of my .223 (all comparison done sans optics).

Thats $825, $1025 if you lump in the mag block. And I am sure you could trim that $825 by going with a less expensive barrel. I think TROS run around $200 depending on size. Even less for RRAs.
