My wife and I quit watching the news until at least 12 minutes after. Then you get the feel good stories, the weather, and sports. It's sad, but its a life changer
I think i will try something similar, and not look at the classifieds at the the high price ammo gouging.

When thug A shoot thug B, I look at it as a civic service, generally removing two parasites by one shot. It's best if they're shot/caught before spawning, stopping the cycle of crime.

When a person is NOT engaging in high-risk activity and gets murdered, that's a whole different situation.

Dallas, Texas - Last night, retired gentleman is awakened to find 32yo, career criminal with 18 page rap sheet, crawling in his window. He shoots and kills the intruder. The criminal's family is notified and shows up at the scene. News media interviews family of criminal. The ydon't understand why that old man had to shoot and kill him. Why couldn't he just said to leave, he had a gun. EVERYBODY deserves a chance, and now a good? man was dead. ??????????????????:screwy:

Seems a little different than it used to be. Great Depression didn't turn people into animals.

I would beg the differ. In addition to the violence here at home, in the form of riots and other things of that nature, there was a series of wars during the great depression, including WWII, and there was the Holocaust.

wars, yes, governments sending folks to the front to kill each other. stalin did start his holocaust during our depression, and the invasion of China, as well as the Spanish war against Communism occurred during this same period. i'm talking about Americans, and our character.

Yep, there were criminal elements, Bonnie and Clyde, etc...but do you really believe there was such widespread criminality in the U.S. as there is now?

The media pumps what sells.

After United 232 suffered a catastrophic hydraulic failure and was "landed" at Sioux City, there was a nationally featured story maybe two weeks later, about a 727 flight being delayed by a minor hydraulic leak. Happens every day, but because of the "hydraulic connection," <sorry> it was a story. Same now with gun violence.

My parents were both in their 20s with one kid (my older brother) when the great depression hit. They said it wasn't so "great," but that they never missed a meal, though they postponed a few. Criminal activity was rife. Lots of informal "Neighborhood Watch" activities. Pretty much everybody where my folks were had one or more guns. The media as we now know it did not really exist, and most violent crimes went unreported at the national and even at the regional level.

If you are old enough to remember any particular set of "good old days," they generally aren't so good. The depression was a violent, scary and desperate time for most folks.

It is unfortunate that "he needed killin'" is a valid defense only in Texas. (old lawyer joke, but nearly true) As to the shot intruder in Texas, the homeowner should come off just fine. I am a bit surprised that the press there has taken the tack reported in this thread. I have done a brief search for this news article and so far have come up dry. Not saying it didn't happen, but haven't found it yet. Post a link if you have one.
