This particular "feature" cannot be turned off through the interface.

What it's doing is keeping a log on your phone, either through GPS or triangulation.
I watched some news program the other day, and they were talking about this very thing. Seems they could track kids through pics they sent on their 3G, and it couldn't be turned off and was trackable. But, the " expert" said on the 4's to turn off the feature in settings.
I' m sure it's still being logged in the phone but not trackable?
It was pretty scary watching how dome perv could track a kid.

That's geotagging photos, which can be turned off.

In this case, the phone periodically logs your location to the phone in plain text.

If a law enforcement agency were to pull all of the data off of your phone during a traffic stop, this data showing everywhere you have been with the phone turned on would be available to them.
