My 18 year old daughter got it done this afternoon. This was a unique deer but it was special because of my daughter’s situation.

You see, when we had the COVID lock down in early 2020, the situation took its toll on her. As a result of being homebound, losing her softball season, not being able to see her friends and the stress of all the fearmongoring regarding COVID, she developed an eating disorder. Anorexia specifically. We caught it early and got her into several treatment programs. She was improving until she herself got COVID in early 2021. As a result, she went downhill fast, to the point we had to hospitalize her for her eating disorder in August, in Texas. Though she was improving, her hospital stay was long. She was missing a lot of her senior year and even spent her 18th birthday in the hospital. Of all things, she was distraught that she was going to miss rifle season. I told her that you never know, but if she makes great progress, she might be able to make it.

Well, she was released from the hospital yesterday. Came home last night, took cap and gown pictures at school this morning and we hauled ass to our place in Bristow this afternoon. She got in her stand at 3:30 and popped this guy at 75 yards at 4:30. She made a great shot with her 308 and watched him run across the food plot head on into a tree, breaking two points off his left side.

It has been an emotional rollercoaster for our whole family but hunting this afternoon and her success made her feel a little closer to normal.

thats the strangest set of horns I’ve seen. Is it gonna get shoulder mounted? Congrats to your daughter!

Well, I did something I haven’t done in a long, long time. I flat missed a resting shot. :disappoin

I let my daughter take the best stand and since I wasn’t sitting there, I decided to go sit on a power line. About 4:15, I saw a really wide 10 pt buck on the neighbors property, 500 yds out. He was coming my way so I ranged way points. I knew if he jumped the fence he would be at 350, so that’s what I dialed the scope in for. Sure enough, he jumped the fence. As soon as he did, he dropped down in a ditch so I hustled over to a utility pole to get a rest. Where I thought he would come up out of the ditch was 325 yds, so I left the scope on 350. He popped up, munched on some acorns but was facing me head on. I watched him for 10 mins before he gave me a quartering shot. Nerves were settled, he turned and froze, so I squeezed the trigger. I gathered up my stuff and headed that way but could find no blood. I looked and looked, but nothing. So I went back to my shooting position to figure out what had gone wrong. Got the range finder out and there was the problem. When he dropped down in the ditch, instead of coming up at 325, he had actually travelled the ditch and came up closer to 250 or 260 yds. I checked my ballistics on my load and that discrepancy in yardage put me shooting about 9 inches high. Since I was aiming square in the middle of his shoulder, I put the shot right over his back.

Only thing worse than missing a wall hanger is wounding one and not finding it. I’m thankful that didn’t happen and he is still out there.

On the 22nd I hit a buck with my 450 Bushmaster at about 85 yards. Flat out knocked him down. I was sure he was toast. He was laying in some tall grass so I couldn't see a whole lot. I wait a few and get down out of my elevated blind. When I get over there he's freakin' gone. I hear him walking through some very think briars. My heart sunk. So I look for blood. Nothing.

Only thing I can think of is the bullet just went straight through and didn't hit anything to open up . . . I haven't been back since.

My daughter shot a big 10 pt at 200 yds with her 300 BLK a few years ago. Same thing. He went down on his front knees, got up and hopped the fence only to go down again. Figured he would be right there. Gathered up our stuff and 20 mins later went looking for blood. Only a few drops here and there. Brought a dog out but couldn’t find it. Month later, the neighbor killed the buck. My daughter’s bullet had hit the shoulder blade and was still embedded in the bone.

That’s when she switched to a 308 and never went back to the Blackout.

Congratulations to both you and your daughter! I hope there's continued improvement and a return to normalcy for y'all.
69 years old and got my first whitetail today. With a crossbow no less!! Was going to sit in the tree stand this evening with the crossbow and with the 308 in the morning. Guess I get to sleep on now
Congratulations! That's awesome!

Very cool!

Congrats! You may well be the luckiest 1st kill bowhunter in the country. Did anyone notice she dropped right by the two track road?
Homemade luck. LOL. I purchased this 80 acre hunting property..... when SHTF place. I have 3 miles of ATV trails thru this heavily wooded 80 acres, I now have 6 tree stands scattered thru it ......each not too far from a trail
