When I shot ground squirrels in CA, 17HMR would blow them apart. 22WMR would kill them, but not blast them. 17HMR was more accurate and had greater reach.

If you buy the right loading the .22 mag has a longer range than the .17hmr. A heavier bullet will retain it's velocity better than a lighter bullet. The better bullets in the .22 mag are just as accurate as the .17hmr.

It is a combination of physics and bullet quality.

Bow...up to 70 yards..unless you can get close enough to slit theYre throats.

Kinda like hawgs....center punch...or in the ear...8/

OOPS Sorry , forgot the ?????

I've actually been reading about the 17 hmr, because of the 22 .....dilema??
Is it viable to buy a 17hmr until the ...dilema passes?
Or Just keep using the 17hmr?
Of course , each has its merit, and a lot of good info here and out there.

So , I'm looking into the 17hmr for a new buy, I have a 22, not mag, but until then a bow is not a bad choice.

Thanks for being patient so I can correct myself.... ;)

I'm looking pretty hard at these new .17HMR Ruger American Rimfires:

I don't currently own any .17 hmr anything. I do have the Compact .22 WMR RAR. I like it very much, plus the JMX-1 mag works for both these rifles. The best of both worlds, one magazine, two calibers. I guess the real question is should I just be patient and wait until Ruger gets around to putting out the stainless steel model of these?

Of course, this isn't helping with my flirtation with expanding into this caliber, either:
