There's an older gentleman (84yo) who lives a few miles North of me who was stationed at Pearl Harbor at the end of WWII. He and a couple others were assigned Flag duty on the Arizona for a month at a time or so. Every day at first light they would row out to the Arizona, raise the Flag, and row out and take it down every evening. He said they were proud to do it, but each trip out was haunting and humbling.

I've b een watching the military channel, and it said there was a special coming out with newly discovered photo's, and some digital enhancment of others. I'd like to watch it. Been to Hawaii twice, but couldn't leave the airport, as it was just a refuel on the way to SE Asia. If I ever get back over there, the memorial will be the first stop.

I would very much like to visit the memorial some day also.

My Grandpa was on the USS Raleigh at the age of 15. He was very large and lied about his age to get into the Navy. After the attack on Pearl Harbor the Navy discovered how old he was and kicked him out. At 16 he enlisted in the Army.

He never would say much about the attack or what he experienced other than "It was a very sad day". He was one of my heros. I only hope I can ever become half the man he was.
