Dennis - I can remember when the .300 Savage was really popular for hunting in the woods of SE Oklahoma. It was the logical step up from a lever action .30-30. I think the really short neck makes the .300 Savage less attractive to handloaders; my guess is the neck was made that way to keep the cartridge short enough to work in the Savage action. But then the Savage 99 was later chambered for .308, .243 & .358.

I have to stay away from the pawn shop in Chickasha because they have an older Model 99 in .300 Savage that would be a nice project. Wood is great, but the blue has some rust from poor storage and it had a recoil pad added that deteriorated from sitting barrel up for years. Really don't want to be buying dies & brass for another rifle I don't need. Back in the fall a pawnshop in Clayton still had a Marlin 336 rechambered to .300 Savage for $275.
