I bet it would be a hassle trying to sign it out to take it to the range, then. All kinds of loops and hurdles to jump through.

A royal PITA. Which is why I kept mine at a buddy's house who lived off base.

I thought the officers could register and keep them in their base housing?

Possibly? But I'm unaware of it personally.

To answer some of the questions regarding personal weapons on military bases. When I left active duty in 2006 here is the way it worked at Camp Pendleton. If you lived in the barracks and wanted to own a gun you had to first register it on base, then it had to be stored in the unit armory. Depending on how well you and the armorer got along determined how much of a pain in the butt is was to check it in and out. If you lived in base housing you could register the weapon on base and keep it in base housing. If you lived off base and wanted to bring a weapon on base to shoot at an MWR range on the weekends you had to register it on base.

There are lots of people on base in an 03xx MOS that wouldn’t need to bring private arms through the gate to inflict serious damage. They would just need to stop by Wal-Mart and buy some XM193/M855 to fuel the M4 they were issued. That's when things could get really scary.

Of course these nut jobs don’t think like normal people though.
