I'll only deal with the second/third generation S&W's
Steel frame/steel slide;
S&W 639 9MM 8+1
S&W 3906 9MM 9+1
S&W 659, 5906, and its DAO siblings 14 to 15+1
There are other's, but these are the most common found.
Alloy frame/steel slide;
S&W 439
S&W 3904
S&W 5903
S&W 5904
S&W 3913
S&W 908, 909, 910, 915 Value series
There are also DAO versions, these are the most commonly found.

It also comes in a 3" RB version, and don't forget about the 940 J-frame in 2" and 3". Ruger also produced it Service/Speed Six in 9MM, and their SP101 in 2" and 3" versions.

Didn't read the whole thread (sorry), but...

-Does it HAVE to be 5", or is 4.5ish alright? If the latter, then one of my favorite subjects: CZ 75 (& variations & clones including Tanfoglio/Witness), BHP (& variations & clones including Argus, FEG, etc.), 1911s from STI and others, S&W Perf. Ctr. 952, various & sundry discontinued S&W 3rd gen autos, hmmm.

I'm a fan of the CZs - still have two, plus one Witness in 10mm.

+1 to the CZ75 - even better if you can find a pre-B version.
