I've found that pain is the best teacher. Think back when you were a kid...no matter how many times you were told not to touch the stove because it was hot, you didn't learn until you burnt yourself. Your parents would lay down rules, but we never learned them til we got our ass busted. When you tied the bathtowel around your neck like a cape and your mother said don't jump off the roof because you can't fly, you didn't learn you couldn't fly til the pain set in from the landing (ok, maybe the last one is just me). My point is all the discipline that really reminds you to do the right things are now illegal to be administered and the the little demons know it.
Sorry but what you are saying is ...experience is the best teacher.
And no discipline is not illegal , beating a kid is not the way to teach them...teaching them is the way to teach them.
Kids are just Little People that dont know yet...they need to be taught ...not beat.
From the 7th grade until the 9th grade I went to the Principals office....I'm here for my swats...What swats you havent done anything yet?
In the 9th grade I said no more swats....I'm not learning that way....so the Teachers started ..Teaching me...it worked.
Ive seen too many little kids beat by their drunken or drug abusing parents to ever agree that beating does any good....now talking to them made me many friends ....parents and kids.
Teach your children and all you come into contact with...you may be the Best example of an Adult some Kids Ever meet.
Good Job Officer .

This. It's about teaching and logical consequences. Children learn from logical teaching and then start to deduce outcomes on their own. Treat them with the same respect you would a fellow adult. If you mess up at work, you boss doesn't swat you. He disciplines you (hopefully). Being a kid is a child's job. If they may mistakes they deserve the same respect, guidance, and coaching an adult would receive.

It's terrible as a parent to see a child that has not had this, and starts doing half-cocked things like swinging a knife. What else is an officer to do? Having a 3 year old I could understand the emotions SgtMojo would have felt. I'm not trying to sound like an internet ninja, but I could probably drawn down and make a felony stop on grown man scumbag without any remorse. But put a "tween" boy in front of me and I too would be pretty shaken by it.

I feel officers are to eager to to confront with deadly force. I will bet Andy Griffith could have defused the situation and he never carried a gun.

Maybe your thoughts on this would be differently had you gotten a call from the Police, informing you that your son was at the Hospital in emergency surgery because his friend just "gutted" him because he picked up a rock during an argument.

Then you get news the responding LEO decided to handle this with "kid gloves" and chose to try and calmly talk the boy down out of fear of "offending" someone or showing any kind of force.

I was out on patrol today and drove up on two KIDS screaming at each other. The particular area had a lot of trees and brush so it was hard to initially see what was in his hands. Anyhow, upon closer inspection I noticed the one kid had a large knife screaming and waving it in the other kids direction (they were separated by a bicycle). I couldn't really believe what I was seeing. Anyhow, I got out of my vehicle and drew my service weapon and quickly walked toward him shouting commands. THANK GOD he listened and didn't make any movements toward the other kid. I had already began to take tension off the trigger. The kid dropped the knife and stepped backward and got on the ground as instructed. I don't think he realized just how close he came to losing his life today. Come to find out, the boy was 12 years old. I have a 11 year old boy at home. I couldn't imagine how it would have been the rest of my life if I had to shoot this boy.

Most kids would have been scared shitless, but this kid had a damn attitude. I have a feeling we will be dealing with this kid in the future. What the hell is wrong with kids these days. These were two boys that had been spending time together, spending the night at each others homes and such according to mom. The 12 year old told me he grabbed the knife because the other kid had a rock......what happened to good ole fist fights? I was floored and it has really bothered me this whole evening. Can't believe I actually came close to shooting a kid.
Good job man. It'll mess with you for a bit. I had a 15 year old pull a .380 on me. I was at slack out pressing when he dropped it. It plays with your mind for a while.

First of all im glad you didnt have to shoot this "kid" maybe he learned a lesson? Maybe he didn't and he'll end up in the same situation with a different ending either way its his choice & his path in life, not yours.

And when did kids just quit having good old fashioned fist fights and being done with it?[/QUOTE]

as far as this^ no offense to any LEOs but this started when schools start having police officers wrangle kids who are fist fighting to work **** out. Im sorry but personally I don't think cops have any business dealing with stupid crap like some kids fighting at school. Its ridiculous that a kid would be sent to juvenile court etc over fighting, its a nanny state policy that has been turned into a BFD when its not.
And when schools make kids feel like they are some kind of abhoration of nature for wanting to strike out physically at another human being then all that pent up anger just escalates. Schools teach kids to be a victim, don't strike back, don't defend yourself, the proper authority figure will do that for you.... pff whatever Ive taught my kids that someone just speaking words is not worth their time but if they lay one finger it had better be on like donkey kong.
