I rarely carry a taser anymore to be honest with you. There are no special rules for anyone. It boils down to officer discretion.

A child is just as capable as an adult to stab someone or pull a trigger. A 12 year old knows that pulling a knife is wrong.

I agree with this, and good on you for doing what you had to do. It sure sounds like, given the circumstance, you did what was warranted and cooler heads prevailed (on the part of the kid) and all is good, for now at least.

the kids these days grow up with no disipline...if you spank a child they go off to human services/foster homes..and you will be prosecuted....when children were disiplined (in the old days) they learned, early on, that breaking the rules was a bad thing to do...nowadays they learn that they answer to no one, that they can do as they please because there is very little punishment involved, a 3-4 yr old doing as they please, hard to imagine but its true, then with no clear boundaries of right and wrong you get a grown up that will do as they please, too many psycologists that dont really have a clue, too many people making your decisions for you, too many people on the payroll making money ....its always about the money...

It's not about kids these days versus kids in the "old days." You are right that it's all about parents instilling good decision-making abilities in their children through discipline (though not necessarily physical discipline). But parents are as good and as crappy now as they were then. The only differences are the speed at which information (mostly negative) is shared. If you think on the whole that kids in the past were any better decision makers than the ones today, you're fooling yourself.

SgtMojo here didn't get a typical example a "modern" kid. He just got one with poor decision making skills. It just easily could have happened 20, 40, 100... years ago.

The use of force continuum posted is right on, but I will dumb it down to make it easier for everyone to understand. The use of force continuum allows the officer to use a level of force one step above what a subject is using. These are not a "One size fits all" tactics, officer discretion comes into play in every use of force event.

Levels of subject resistance.

1. Verbal non-compliance, refusing to follow officer commands.
2. Passive resistance, also known as "Dead Weight"
3. Defensive resistance, pulling away from an officer
4. Active aggression, physically coming towards the officer.
5. Deadly weapon use.

Officer responce

1. Officer presence, just being there
2. Soft empty hand techniques, such as pressure points.
3. Hard empty hand techniques, such as kicks and strikes.
4. Intermediate weapons, taser, baton, OC spray.
5. Deadly force.

You sir, are why LEO's deserve our respect and gratitude. We too often hear about one doing the wrong thing, but we seldom hear about the countless acts like your experience. I guess good actions don't sell papers or advertising. Thank you again for your actions and la k of actions.

I've found that pain is the best teacher. Think back when you were a kid...no matter how many times you were told not to touch the stove because it was hot, you didn't learn until you burnt yourself. Your parents would lay down rules, but we never learned them til we got our ass busted. When you tied the bathtowel around your neck like a cape and your mother said don't jump off the roof because you can't fly, you didn't learn you couldn't fly til the pain set in from the landing (ok, maybe the last one is just me). My point is all the discipline that really reminds you to do the right things are now illegal to be administered and the the little demons know it.

I appreciate on the nice comments my fellow OSAer's......I just wanted to add, that I wasn't looking for a pat on the back. I think the fact that I have an 11 year old son is why it bothered me so much. I just needed to vent. Once again thanks for the comments and thanks for allowing me to vent.

What the hell is wrong with kids these days. what happened to good ole fist fights?

I can sum it up pretty quickly.. X-Box, PlayStation and absentee parents. I remember spending time in the living room getting whooped up on playing PlayStation boxing with my sons. Now kids spend the day shooting cops and innocent bystanders. When you allow your kids to become desensitized playing these disgusting games, you get kids who bring knives to a fist fight. We can only hope another LEO is around when this worthless POS decides to try again.

Two very important things happened today. One you were able to gain control of the situation with no one getting hurt. Two you went home safe. It doesn't get much better than that. Good job SgtMojo67!!!!!
