I feel officers are to eager to to confront with deadly force. I will bet Andy Griffith could have defused the situation and he never carried a gun.

I'm trying to recall an episode of that fictional show where the fictional character had to confront a real child with a real mental disturbance swinging a real knife around and really threatening another life. :-)

To the OP: I'm not about to question your training or actions, I'm just curious: do you carry a Taser and what are the rules for using that, especially on a child or short or small-statured person?

When someone is swinging a knife around deadly force is probably warranted. Child or not when an innocent life is at stake deadly force may be they only way.

the kids these days grow up with no disipline...if you spank a child they go off to human services/foster homes..and you will be prosecuted....when children were disiplined (in the old days) they learned, early on, that breaking the rules was a bad thing to do...nowadays they learn that they answer to no one, that they can do as they please because there is very little punishment involved, a 3-4 yr old doing as they please, hard to imagine but its true, then with no clear boundaries of right and wrong you get a grown up that will do as they please, too many psycologists that dont really have a clue, too many people making your decisions for you, too many people on the payroll making money ....its always about the money...

I rarely carry a taser anymore to be honest with you. There are no special rules for anyone. It boils down to officer discretion. And to reply to the comment on police too eager to use deadly force. Police officers are trained by a use of force continuum. Every situation is different. We are allowed to stay one above the suspect. Someone has a knife, I go to gun. If they drop the knife and want to fight, I drop to baton, pepper spray, or taser (all 3 are on the same level). You get the picture. The lowest level of force on the graph is actually officer presence.

A child is just as capable as an adult to stab someone or pull a trigger. A 12 year old knows that pulling a knife is wrong. It takes the average person 1.5 seconds to traverse 21 feet. That doesn't give that much reaction time. That is why I pulled my gun. To protect the other child and myself. I don't regret for a second my decision to draw my firearm.
