I'd say it's a threat, but not on the same level as the gradual "dumbing down" of our population and the failure of our public education systems. Ignorance is what I view as the greatest threat to our national security.

I repectfully disagree with post 1 & 2.

1. I am fat and pose no threat to the nation.
2. Kids today are way better educated than previous generation. I mean how many 70, 80 or 90 year olds can hook up an Xbox, play modern warfare with 10 people nation wide, text, and do homework. Most old people can barely work a remote.

Great point. Did anyone ever actually figure out how to make that flashing 12:00 go off on the VCR??

I definitely agree with this. Our youth arn't educated, they're indoctrinated. IMO the worst thing, that has happened since the fed. reserve act, was the establishment of the deop. of ed. Disclaimer--MY views which I express are not my own.

1. The more fat people there are, the fewer fit people there are. The fewer fit people there are, the fewer there will be that will be able to serve in the military. The smaller the military, the less capable it is of guaranteeing national security. Now I know that bigger isn't always better, but smaller isn't always better either. God help us if we have to fight China in 30 years with a military that is a shell of its former self.

Studies have shown that obesity is strongly correlated to diabetes and heart disease, which are two of our nation's leading causes of death. Since we (collectively and not individually) seem to be insisting on socialized medicine, this means that a fatter population will lead to higher costs. No one wants to face a tax increase though, so we'll just continue to get fat and run up the national debt paying for things that we can't afford.

2. Our performance in Math and Science is declining against the rest of the industrialized world and has been for decades. Ever wonder why our government has gotten so screwed up? It's because we (as a nation) have let it. We've become lazy and ignorant and ceded decision making authority to "experts" who are increasingly turning out to be powermongers, crooks, or both. People just don't know their history, economics, or social sciences well enough to fully comprehend the nation of liberty that was set up by our founders.

Both of these things are threats to national security to some degree.
