I have to disagree on that. The NFL and NFLPA have both been pretty vigilant in protecting college football, in sharp contrast to what the NBA did.

FWIW, one of my coworkers thinks that the superconferences (starting with the SEC) will eventually kick the NCAA to the curb, eliminate the four years of eligibility rules, and officially become semi-pro leagues. They’re really not that far off from it now with NIL, the transfer portal, and the big money conference TV contracts.

Maybe the transfer portal was just a big parting middle finger to college football by the NCAA…

Well, yeah, they're getting everything paid for. And now a lot of them are making FAR more than they'd ever make in an actual job.

They’re also being forced to study by the athletics departments to maintain eligibility.

I haven’t looked recently, but the graduation rates among athletes has been higher than in the general student population over the last 30 years or so.

No doubt they worked hard in class and earned the grades given.

Yeah but college football was synonymous with amateur status. It's far from amateur football now. I guess I'll give you it's college/university branded still, but that's it.

College athletics have been about the Benjamins ever since the universities started hiring the coaches and building the stadiums. It’s a way for the universities to maintain alumni involvement, which means more donations to the universities, and not just for athletics.

The only difference now is that the athletes are getting a share of the profits from their work.

Which is the definition of a professional. The idea that an athlete would play for the benefit of an education is laughable now.

And there is zero loyalty to the team. Don't like it? Hit the portal. Oregon pays more? Transfer.

How many games involved brawls this weekend?

The whole thing lost about 90% of my interest, much like the NFL did years ago.

Some of the English teachers should be fired then, because a big chunk of the players doing interviews couldn't string together a coherent sentence if their life depended on it.
