Even at Virginia, who sucks at football, we lost guys to the portal. I really dont understand some of them, like the QB. He'll never play in the NFL, wouldnt even make 2nd string on most SEC teams. Why would he give up a first rate education for a murky football future?

Worse, it caused our National Championship winning coach in basketball, Tony Bennet, to retire.

Bill Belichick made out like a bandit in NC. $10 million guarantee.

Yeppers. Can’t you see a 72 yr old man that’s all about control of his system from the NFL that allows that to piss some little self righteous 19-20 yr old off and boom he’s off to the portal because he wants more money!
That will happen and the old man cannot stop him.
NC has a good thought in theory hiring him but In reality NCAA football is out of control vs the NFL.
Can’t see that working out for either party long term. MONEY is skewed so much in favor of the players, and add to it they can and will quit on a dime the old man cannot win that battle

I don’t think NIL by itself is a bad thing—the players have been generating beaucoup bucks for the universities and NCAA and getting a pittance in return, so I don’t have a problem with them getting a taste of the gate, so to speak (especially for the vast majority of them who won’t be going on to lucrative pro contracts).

Combining NIL with the transfer portal was the killer combination, and that transfer portal was 100% self-inflicted by the NCAA. By doing that, they’ve not only destigmatized and eased leaving a school, they’ve actually incentivized it. That’s not just bad for sports, it sets a bad example for society: not only does not keeping your commitments not cost you anything, but it also gains you financially.

Coaching is a different animal because coaching is an actual profession, and the way you advance in most professions is to move to new opportunities. Coaches need to be mobile because there’s very little opportunity to move up within an organization without it—if you’re a young coach, you need the coaches above you to move up so you can move up, but if the program is successful, the head coach isn’t going anywhere, so the coordinators can’t move up, which means the position coaches can’t become coordinators, etc. The only means of advancing in coaching is for someone in the chain to move to a new program (e.g, for an OC to become a head coach elsewhere), thereby freeing up positions for more junior coaches to move up in the organization.

You can argue about NIL making college athletes de facto pros, but it’s still not a profession in the same way coaching is—f’rinstance, a coach can have a career measured in decades, but players are generally four years and done.

They know all that going into college ball now. They have agents and their families have agents. I have ZERO sympathy for any of them. Very few have any desire to earn an education even though it’s paid for.

Recent case in point. One of Univ of Miami s LB went to the portal. His demands to sign with another university,

45,000 a month as long as he stays there
First Class Plane tickets for his family to all home and away games
5 star accommodations for his family for all away games and if available at home games

there were some additional things also but they did not stick out as much.

Anyway Miami had a choice . They could sign him or he’d go. Haven’t heard who has picked him up yet.

Does anyone really believe this guy will get an education. I don’t think so.
What he has learned is entitlement and greed.

I’ve shifted my football interests to the NFL where there are rules to follow and keeping commitments or it will cost you, all the while put it effort or you’ll be cut. PLAY OR PAY.

Update he plays at Univ of Florida and the guys name is Jack Pyburn He wants a guaranteed starting position at Outside Linebacker , 45 grand / month, guaranteed to play ALL third downs, and the other stuff I’ve already mentioned for his family.

NCAA has decreed that the scholarship rosters have to be cut from 105 to 85.

Why does the NCAA do everything possible to mess up their cash cow?

Same. I get it, but it still sucks. And if he and Bowman, Jr. were on the field, I feel that they win the game.

I do not get it. They are now PAID for playing and they owe the people who pay them to show up for all the games. The days of "they are just college kids" is freaking over, they are now employees so should play every game on the schedule.

That’s true, but if you don’t have the transfer portal, none of that happens because the player has to sit out for a season after transferring. The players who can make those demands are the top players, and what they want more than the money is playing time, so they’re not going to sit out for a year unless their next season is in the NFL.
