Simply put, there are people on both "sides" who want to live in or recreate the past. Those people care more about what happened in the past than what's happening in America today. The only important history is the history we write going forward from today. The past is past and no one can change it.

So ask yourself, is the past so important that you're willing to compromise the future of our country to maintain it's prominence?

Is the past so important? Yes it is, study it and you may see why. Those who forget the past .............

First the confederate flag, then what? Looks like elimination or marginalization of major historical figures who do not fit the progressive image of the country.

you mean like the people who view the battle flag as a symbol of 'personal freedom' and want to ignore everything else about it?

If we're going to talk about the flag's place in history then lets put it all out there. From rebellion to defeat to intimidation and oppression. Then we can discuss whether it's history is worth celebrating on capitol grounds or if it should be best left to historic battlefields, reenactments and display by private individuals instead of on state grounds.

So my analogy to Isis stands.

ISIS taking down religious symbols is an effort to hide or revise history. While they are trying to abolish other religions and other socio-political systems by force, their taking down of historic symbols is just as it appears … an effort to revise history.

To that, it is no different than what is going on with the “Stars and Bars”. Not going to abolish prejudice and racism by removing the flag. This is not going to end bigotry. They are just removing a symbol that to some resembles the emotion of hate and bigotry which is again just a feel good measure.

And there is nothing wrong with that. But the question is where do the “feel good” measures end? How do we define a symbol? How do we cope with the various definitions that people have

Does the flag represent the Confederacy? Yes. Does the Confederacy represent “slavery”? Yes. But with that said, the Civil War was not just about abolishing slavery. It was about trade and it was about state’s rights. Are state’s rights and trade as “evil” as “slavery”? How do we rationalize emotions in defining symbols?

lol....the confederate flag isn't being banned. It's being removed from government facilities. You people would be sh!tt!n twinkies if someone wanted to place a British flag on public property. We were British before we were Americans. It's in all of the history books.
