Well, it happened to me. Long story, so if you need cliffs, go take your ritalin first.

Last night I was staying at my parents' house down in Poteau and when I got up this morning to go in to work, as I disarmed the alarm on my new (to me) Tahoe, it chirped 4 times, which means it was triggered during the night somehow.

So, I go to looking around the truck and see a small square zippered bag sitting on my back bumper. WTF? So I open it, and inside is a Garmin nav unit and what looks to be some cables and some wireless headsets, the kind that you use with the AV unit in a vehicle. Also, looks like some dried blood on a plastic bag inside the case... the plot thickens.

So I walk around my truck and notice there are 4 spots on the rear window and the passenger side rear window (the big one, not the door window) where someone smashed a rock into it trying to break the glass. This is obviously what set off my alarm, but I am flabbergasted at the fact that with such blows neither of the windows broke! They are scratched and pitted and now look like @$$, as there are big white chips/pits on my dark black tinted glass on my black Tahoe. DAMN!

So as I'm sitting there fuming, I happen to look over at my step-dad's F150 and finally notice the back window is smashed out. I look inside and the thing is totally trashed inside (it's pretty dirty normally, anyways), where they pulled everything out of every nook and cranny looking for something to steal. Looks like they didn't get anything out of it except maybe some change from the ashtray, but they did leave behind a set of keys. No car key on it, but maybe some house keys. :loser:

So, the cops come out and take 2 reports and they tell us they already caught a guy who was breaking into cars at a motel across the street early this morning. He's a local deadbeat loser who has been busted for the same thing before but of course our court system slapped him on the wrist and let him walk. At least twice before.

So I run into the cops later at work and they tell me that so far they've found 14 cars this maggot broke into. :fullauto:

So the best news is.... he didn't get into my truck and steal the work laptop I had in the back, or the .45 I had in the center console! Guess the alarm scared them off and they left some of the booty they had snatched from someone else on my bumper.

Lesson learned... nothing of value left in the truck, and I'll be getting a better paging alarm next month when I get paid. :mosh: And I guess someone will be getting their GPS unit and headphones back, too. Good for them!

But, on the down side, my windows look like crap now and I'm sure the deductible on my insurance isn't going to cover them for replacement. :( So I have to put up with crappy-looking scratched/pitted windows for now. :(

Call your insurance company about the glass. A rock hit my windshield on the turnpike awhile back and sort of broke it, mostly gouged it and ruined my shorts... Anyway, due to the nature of the damage it couldn't be repaired. My insurance company (Farmers) didn't even blink, 36 hours later I had a new windshield installed in the parking lot at my office...

One would like to hope that the guy that broke into your vehicles would get punished, but I wouldn't expect too much these days. Hopefully you can get things squared away.

Never too late to write a letter to the DA's office and encourage the other owners to do it as well. Include the dollar value of repair, the time, effort and hassle required to get said repairs done. Send them all to the regional press as well. Don't know the dollar threshold that makes theft/ vandalism a Felony, but if he has prior Felony convictions and they go after him for multiple Felony charges, we could be paying for his chow, lodging and KY for a long time.
