That is what I thought. I do know the .25-06 is a necked down .30-06 too.
My old gunsmith buddy Larry Williams (RIP) used to shoot an 8-06. (8mm or .323 bullet in a 30/06 case).
He killed everything with it. Not as fiery as an 8mm Mag, but hotter than an 8x57.
There's been about everything under the sun tried using the 06 case.
He ended up liking a 7.5x55 Swiss case necked down to 6.5. Talk about a flat shooter. He killed loads of Wyoming antelope with that one. (the Swiss case is a better design and ahead of it's time)
Ive used a 25-06 and it took 2 shots but I harvested the Elk. I have used a 7 mag and had 1 shot kill. Currently I have a 300 PRC im going to start using on large animals far away.My wife used to use a 243 savage because it was easy to tote. After chasing quite a few blood trails, she switched to a 6.5 creedmoor. Alot better results. I use my 6.5 creedmoor or my .308 for coyotes and deer and have always been pleased. I gotta admit though, I'll always regret selling my 25-06.
I shoot a .300 Winchester magnum on elk in New Mexico and have been very pleased with it.
Feel free to be that guy; that’s why I said “basically is” instead of “is.” The general idea is that the .308 is what the .30-‘06 would’ve been if it’d been developed with 1950s metallurgy and powders instead of 1906 technology, but I didn’t intend to imply that it was an evolution of the .30-‘06.
Exactly. Back when the .300 was first introduced, it was considered a wildcat cartridge.
Mine on an Arisaka action has taken a few deer cleanly.
