That's what it is. They are shredded. I had no idea there's a nut in the center.
That little tidbit of info is thanks to my Dad when I was a kid. Saw a half one with shreds lying all around and couldn't for the life of me figure out how that happened. :D

If you look at a shredded one closely, you can see the little hollow where the nut was (or find one interrupted and the nut will be visible).

Bodarc posts are in high demand from what I've seen with wood workers because of the yellow color plus there is green stripes in them not present in standard osage orange.
My late Brother in-law and a friend made some grips from Bois D'arc for his .38 service revolver (he was an officer in the Denison, TX police). They put True Oil on them, and they turned out a medium-dark brown.

He was pretty disappointed, because he wanted them to have that yellow color.
