What age do you guys feel is appropriate then to start teaching children the concept of respecting the property and rights of others? While I agree that "it's only grass", sometimes a cheap lesson early is better than an expensive one later.

People often wonder why this country is eroding into a cess pool. The OP gives us the perfect example of why the US is doomed. He, like yourself, is more concerned about his dormant Bermuda than the fact that he has the opportunity to help shape the lives of 2 kids. This country would be a whole lot better off if more people (parents too) took more time and effort to help shape the next generation! Plenty of negative influence in the world today, very little positive!

Best thoughts yet in this thread. These kids dad is working hard. You havea chanceto be a strong yet mannered male rolemodel tothem. You stated yourself that you have a good relationship with the kids. Be a mentor. As some others have said, be their friend and they will stay off because you ask them too or of respect. If it really bothers you as much asyou say it does and they are stubborn, give the some consequences. Drive on your lawn, and you don't play bball with them next time they ask. .. Be sure to explain why. "Sorry Johnny, I can't play ball tonight because I'm still upset about you driving on my lawn yesterday. Let's do it tomorrow instead. "

my boy is 10 and has slowly learned it over his years, but he is still 10yrs old. i don't think one can say "happy 11th b-day, here is the--concept of respecting the property and rights of others-- manual".

OMG!!! Its kids being kids who would ever think that could happen??

Seriously, if this is the thing that gets someone all worked up they should thank their lucky stars that there isn’t something more pressing in their life like total economic collapse, a government out of control or an insane would be dictator in the Oval Office.

Go ahead and be an a-hole to your neighbors and just see how much fun they can make your life. If you want to keep kids off your lawn give them a couple of small bags of M&Ms or Blow Pops. Tell them you know they didn’t mean to drive their electric car in your yard and you sure would appreciate it if they would be more careful. Wash rinse repeat until you win them over. Win the hearts and minds or lose your own sanity. A little payoff to the would be junior mafia / terrorists will get you much farther. Guaranteed!

Just make sure that what you really aren’t pissed about is the fact that renters live next door rather than someone with a vested interest. That would be majorly un-cool to take out on kids who are in fact just along for the ride.

And yes neighbors can be a real P.I.T.A. too. No doubt about it

Agreed. You get a lot further with neighbors using the carrot instead of the stick. Be an a** to them as little kids and they're likely to make your life hell when they get a bit older. Unfortunately, you've probably already shown them what an awesome neighbor you're going to be so changing their perception will probably be difficult.

If he has "slowly learned it over the years", then you obviously started teaching the concept several years ago. That was the premise of my question. My next question would be, "If the parents refuse to teach it, then who?" I don't expect exceptionally young children to fully grasp the concept, but they should have some idea that destroying, ruining, or taking the property of others is wrong. My problem with this thread is that we have jumped on the OP for being "a bad neighbor" while completely alleviating the parent and the children of any responsibility for their actions or lack thereof.
