I had the same problem this fall with my Jeep, everything worked but the starter. Even wouldn't work when jumped unless I left the cables on for a LONG (like, 30+ minutes) time. Tried a charger, went to full charge in like 4 minutes. Something is not right there.

OK so I know something is wrong with the battery. Removed it to take to AUtozone for testing (10:30 on Sunday night + wife's car = 24 hour Autozone on S. Western). Didn't even need to test it as the casing was cracked.

In short, I would still think the battery is the issue.

This sounds EXACTLY like what it is doing. I went to the bank day before yesterday and it pulled this little stunt. Clicked the key 4 times and it started up so I came straight home -- no problems. BUT when I turned the car off in the driveway and tried it again ... OPPS ... I'm no dummy ... I have waited patiently until GC's days off so he could deal with it.

Hey!! What good is being married if you can't bum something off on the other person from time to time??

ETA: I am gonna go log GC off now ... I am making him sound like such a gurl! LOL

I forgot it is already November, and in the fall. This occurred last fall (late Nov, early Dec). Man how time flies.

I also remembered it got relatively cold (i.e as it has this week) when the problem showed itself. Like, a 10-15 degree change from the days prior. Seems to be just enough temp. change to make the hidden problems come to light.

I've had probably 30+ vehicles over the years and had this exact same scenario many times. I've never replaced a starter on any car, but I've replaced MANY batteries. I've even had batteries "test" good, but just didn't work. I believe it's due to one or more (but not all) of the cells in the battery going bad. The battery will "sort of" work for powering small things like dashboard lights and maybe even headlights but when it comes time for cranking the starter it just won't do it.

Good luck.

if the battery tests good a length of wire and jump the connection from the battery to the starter directly. It will either try to crank or it won't. If it does it's a connection - hell I will gladly swing by after 5 if ya'll would like and see what I can find or help with. 5 "blocks" isn't that far for me to go. And 2 heads and an extra set of hands never hurts.

Well ... I might have him take you up on that. Let's see what happens when he gets back home from Autozone ...

Many vehicles for me over the years, several batteries, but only 1 starter (on a lady friend's 1993 Accord). It was pretty obvious when it was the starter, as it was sticking, i.e. you could tap it gently with a mallet, and the solenoid would finally click and the starter turn.
