In my experience, Most Gold & Silver or Coin shops will buy at ~20% under spot for the items weight.

They turn around and list it for ~ 20% above spot

Sounds like a great deal for "protecting" yourself. Buy a $1000 for $1200 or sell for $800. Spot price rises 50% to break even.

Lead and brass is a better investment.

Better to sell private party but be expecting to be asked to have it checked out to make sure its real gold or silver. Lots of fakes out there. Was talking to a couple of pawn shops down closer to the border and they are seeing a huge amount of fakes. Apparently the illegals' are being told to get rid of their cash and buy gold jewelry so the money isn't taken by the gov. I've seen a few of these pieces most are marked 18k and the color is off for supposedly being real.
