God, the SHTF threads always kill me. People are going to "bug out". Where? I hear guys (even my own brother) talk of this kind of foolishness, but I'd like to know where everyone is planning to go (if they don't have a setup there already). "I'm going to the mountains". Right. If they can make it, and 9/10s of the plains folk talking this garbage have never had to actually survive in the mountains. Bear food, for sure - before some other Cleetus kills the bear and eventually starves to death. If it hits the fan, I'm staying home - or - heading to my parent's house in Kansas if I can make it (water well there, etc.). Somehow I think people don't realize that food will only last for a very short time, and eating 5000 rounds of .223 ammo or the plastic gun-de-jour that normally eats it isn't going to produce much of a turd. Wise people would bug in, not grab their "bug out bag" and run out into the unknown. Better to have twice as many seeds as cartridges, I say. After every toothless redneck kills everything you can shoot to eat (and leaves most of the carcass to rot on the ground), the idea of a firearm for anything other than personal protection is pretty much moot - except for the smart ones to guard their gardens and water wells. My guess is most would eventually die from starvation or two-legged predators.

:soldiers:Well it would be hard to carry everything you would want to in a SHTF time. But if you have a plan it has to be flexable to bend with what is going on. If you are at work have a kit in your office that will help you get to your car such as good shoes / boot's take off those lofer's or hill's , flash light, multi tool, food, water. In the car a good day pack with first aid more food ,water, larger knife, other clothing, jacket, gun and ammo. if you can drive out away from the area do so if not start walking take path just off the main route's have a some type of plan for your spouse. if you work in the same city have a metting place then move toward's home the kid's school what ever. If your at home decide if you need to bug out or in. but have your kit ready to put in the car take what you really need in time of survival. If you have a place out in the stick's to go to then have some supply's there hidden away. but if it's food/water. rotate it keep it fresh. PVC tubes cammo up with good cheap 22 rifle ammo, fire making , firstaid, what ever you can think of eather barried or tyed up high in the tree's where it's hard to see. Just keep it to your self for that time of need. I have weapon's in other town's that I go to visit just in case SHTF when there. And it go's on and on. And if you never have to use it Great. But if you do it;s best to have a good plan and plan ahead.

Watch "The Road" for a good depiction of how crappy life will be after something apocalyptic. People can hide away all the ammo in the world, but their money would be better spent on other things already mentioned - water treatment systems and some type of food and power supply. And then you are rooted to wherever you are at. Then, and only then, would lots of ammo be handy, but lets face it, defending yourself and property would be near impossible against a determined, starving horde of people. Survival would require cooperation with others.

Unless, of course, you plan to go on a murderous rampage and try to take what you need by force. But then you are limited to foraging and raiding, neither of which would do much for your chances at survival on the long term.

Just my opinion. Good luck when it happens. Issues of political turmoil and local lawlessness are another issue. Some kind of temporary, if violent, situation and with some functioning government or larger social apparatus working to restore order creates a different problem. But that is not a EOTW event.

If I lived in a violent third world setting, and having seen too many cases might equals right in history, I would be darned sure I was the best armed as I could be.

Its always caught me as funny when folks start talking about what, and how much they are going to carry during something like these. I guess its ok if your planning to hold up in your home, but really have some of you given any thought as to how much this stuff weighs if you bug out. I know we have vehicles, and most of us keep our tanks full, but if thats all you've got, and lets say there won't be a resupply like in an EOTW type event, just how far do you think you can carry all the things your going to need. 1000rds of .45acp, well folks thats 100+lbs right there, and only a few pounds less for the same amount in 9MM. Now thats not counting your other needs that will also be on your back. Everything from food to T.P., to water. We haven't even covered that 8lb superdooper, everything but the kitchen sink "assault rifle" that your planning on running and gunning with, and all the ammo your going to need for that. Planning on lugging a couple of thousand rounds for your fav rifle?? Some of you really need to pack all this stuff up an try and wear this. Just make sure someone else is there when "I've fallen and can't get up"!

Not trying to pick any fights, just trying to get your brain cells wrapped around the idea that your going to have to pack light. You can ask around to all the other folks on here who have spent time in the US Army, and Marines what its like to march 12, 26, 40 miles with 65 to 95 pounds, sometimes more, in their ruck, lug two to three canteens of water, webgear, rifle, and ask them how easy it was. I don't think to many of them, myself included, are going to state "Man that was fun, when can we do it again"!!!

How about if I just put a disclaimer, when the next SHTF post shows up,that says.......for entertainment purposes only.I'm sure most of the posters on these threads are not really thinking they are going to take the "kitchen sink" with them.I believe many have put thought in these scenarios and are certainly not going to share them on the web.
