We ought to be heading in the exact opposite direction and remove the property tax on tangible inventory as well. It's not only stupid, it's a burden that surrounding states don't carry and the precise reason why Amazon.com choose to locate their shipping warehouse in Coffeyville instead of Oklahoma. We could have had those jobs in Tulsa which is where it all ends up being shipped from anyhow (at least until the Post Office debacle shuts down the Tulsa processing plant and all parcels go through OKC)

<sigh> Oklahoma, while enjoying a low cost of living, is NOT business friendly.

Seriously. When you're trying to convince someone to support you, it helps to articulate just how the new tax will be harmful.

That first post is the crux of the issue. Why do you think something that's worth money should not be taxed? Everything else follows from that.

Now a good discussion did follow from that, obviously you didn't read it or don't care. Just because I ask tough questions means I have no business experience.
They'll just get tougher from here.

Expect to be attacked anyway.

All that seems a little cart before the horse to me. Shouldn't you articulate how the tax will be helpful? Unless of course you're a Statist who believes everything flows from government and we should graciously accept whatever they're willing to let us keep. ;)

I see no reason to argue in favor of a tax that I don't support. 2013 the new tax is set to become the status quo. We are arguing against that.

Why is it crazy to pay taxes on something if it's worth money?

All property taxes should be abolished. It makes no sense to pay a tax on something just because you own it. Even if you pay off the mortgage on your house, you still have to pay rent to the state in the form of property taxes. And while we're at it, let's abolish estate taxes and capital gains tax.

Here's a little more in-depth analysis of SQ766: http://okpolicy.org/blog/taxes/stat...lot-measure-would-have-tangible-consequences/

IMO it's too vague, and if it passes will let companies chip away at Oklahoma's tax base. Our infrastructure, schools, and public services don't need any less funding.

E:

For emphasis

The amendment would also likely mean a property tax increase for homeowners. Tulsa County for example receives around 8 percent of its property tax revenue from centrally assessed property. Any significant reduction in that amount would have to be offset by cuts in spending on public schools and other programs; for items that cannot be cut, such as bond issues and legal judgments, local assessors will have to increase property tax rates to offset lost revenue. In other words, while passage of SQ 766 would hand a large tax cut to big corporations, most homeowners and small businesses could see their property taxes go up.

If you're a small business, and you're worried about significant tax burden from "intangibles," I guarantee that your brand and client lists aren't worth as much as you think they are.

I think my taxes are high enough already. About 35% on income, another 11% on all the guns I build (which is my income) and then another 9% when I buy something. The government is taking 55% and I get to spend 45%......and I'm the guy doing the work. Then add in property taxes, car registration, etc and the numbers get even worse.

And this tax BS to fund schools.......I shouldn't be paying any of it, since I don't have any kids. It's not MY responsibility to pay for YOUR kids education.
