I plan on doing a lot of hiking over the next couple of weeks. We usually go back up in to the mountains 4-5 miles and back. I carry a few things "probably" not everything that I should. The wife and I plan on getting up about 4am and hiking about 10 miles back into the woods. This will be the farthest I have gone in many years. I know some of you guys are into hiking. What is a good list of things to have on a trip that far?
I will have
water
protein bars
fixed blade knife
strike anywhere matches
zip lock bag full of dryer lint. "Old Boy Scout"
small first aid kit
extra socks
phone "for what it is worth out there."
What else should I carry?
Thanks guys.

Emergency space blanket
Compass and topo map of the area
Headlamp
Ditch the matches for a couple bic lighters
Toilet paper/wet wipes (never fails, I get a mile into the trail and nature calls.)
Camera

(20 miles round trip? That's an aggressive day hike)

This is why I ask. Do you know of anywhere in OKC that I can get the blanket and compass in the morning?
I have never carried a compass, but that does not need that the day will not come.

I have a hand held GPS. It doesn't work in canyons.

I don't know if Plan B outfitters is still in business, but they specialized in equipment like your looking for.

Academy sports or Bass Pro...even Walmart should have them.

When it comes to emergency blankets, the original "Space" brand is preferred.

Also a good idea to pack one of those cheap/disposable rain ponchos that come in a small pouch.

I may get up and hit Academy in the morning. I am going to be in Amarillo also. I might go check out Gander Mountain.
Thanks for the info guys. I love the feeling you get when you are back in the woods and nobody is around for miles, but I know how that can be a bad thing too.
