How to gift a vehicle to a family member?

If I bought a car for a family member who was a teenager at the time and then later want to sign it over to her as a young adult, how do I handle the title? The back of the title only seems to allow for "selling" a vehicle so, if I sign it away, won't they be asking her questions at the tag agency if the sales price shows zero and she wants to get the title changed to her name?

Go to the tag agency with the family member and sign an affidavit that your giving it to a relative.

I’ve done that twice, it’s been about 4 years since the last one but seems you pay like $30.

Just call the tag office, they’ll advise.

If there's a sale they have to pay a sales tax on the estimated value of the vehicle I think. It wont be a tax on $1 but the book value of said car.

Iirc it's relatively simple but there's a different procedure for immediate family vs extended family/friends. Extended family and friends would still pay tax I believe along with the transfer of title fee.

Step daughters dad did this from Texas. Had title notarized in Texas and the tag agency had a form to fill out here. Didn't cost anything extra besides title transfer and registration.

Just did this twice recently, IMPORTANT to NOT put any value in the spot for how much. Correct that even $1 will trigger their minimum value for it & someone will pay tax. As for family member they have no way other than you telling them that the person is not you immediate so/daughter/ect. Just get the form off of the states web site get it filled out, then signed & notarized, & take it to the tag office.

As stated above, GO TO TAG AGENCY, tell them you want to GIFT transfer title to daughter. No value, it is her car. $30 title fee.
