This picture from the meme thread got me thinking about our recent washer / dryer failure
We had a Kenmore set that was around 20 years old and still working when we gave it to our newly wed son & his bride a little over 13 years ago. We replaced those and bought a new Maytag set, the new front loaders that were the popular choice back then, and I guess still are. We got them with the pedestals so they were easier to get to the clothes. Pedestals were $99 each back then.
Fast forward to this last week, our Maytag washer quit after a little over 13 years, but not heavy usage since it's just the two of us. Washer was blinking two error codes on display, repair man said we'd be into the repair for about $500 or more if more than one of the control electronics board was bad. He said we were lucky to get 13 years out of a front loader. Worried that big of repair bill on an older machine might just be a temporary fix until something else happened to it because of its age, so off to get a new one and decided to go ahead and get a new washer and dryer set.
Talked to three different sales people at different stores and they all told us how lucky we were to get 13 years out of the front loader. They all said 8 to 10 years is their life expectancy before having to be replaced. One lady standing next to us while the salesman talking about how none of the new ones last, told me her Maytag front loaders lasted only 4 years and was told they would cost more to repair than they were worth.
We looked at some new front loaders initially, and the pedestals are now $289 to $350 each depending on brands, but after hearing about the lack of dependability and longevity with the front loaders we decided to go back to the more traditional top loader washer and matching dryer.
We ended up choosing a Speed Queen set with a bumper to bumper 5 year warranty with in home service, parts, and labor included with the purchase. They also get good reviews for longevity. Time will tell if we chose wisely.
None of these beasts are cheap, sticker shock, and WHY are dryers priced exactly the same as the washer. Used to be the dryer was always the cheaper of the two.
Anyway, anyone else irritated that these appliances and other appliances don't last they way they used to? Inflation is hard enough without having companies producing poor quality products.
