I've used CFLs a few times, but I don't agree that a 45w CFL = 100w incandesent. It may be under lab conditions, but not under realworld light output. As soon as it died, I replaced it with a incandesent. I've never used an led bulb in my house so I can't comment on those, but I'll continue to stock up on the old school bulbs.

I have used the CFL's when I couldn't find Incandescents, and I despise them. They put out half the light that incandescents do (TO MY EYES) and I have yet to see proof that they actually last any longer than incandescents (IN MY EXPERIENCE). Granted, I stopped keeping logs of light bulbs replaced when I stopped being an Electrician's Mate in the Navy, but I have had to change them in houses I rented for less than a year, after installing them myself earlier that year.

I hate to think that some of the arguments above are emphasizing that you should have the right part for the right piece of equipment when we're discussing a light bulb. . .This isn't an engine, a nuclear reactor, a lower parts kit for an AR. . .this is a friggin light bulb. Something mom, dad, the blond putting a McD's order in at the library, and your grandma with alzheimers is buying at the store. They're not going to go home and say "Oh dang, this light bulb complies only with SubSection C of the Attic Lighting Code. . ."

As far as mercury in fluorescents and proper disposal goes, I revert to the dad, mom, blondie, and mental granny statement above. They're not going out of their way to find a fluorescent bulb disposal location, which we couldn't even find while I was in the Navy, disposing of hundreds of bulbs at a time. They're going straight into the dump with everything else. Crash, shatter, mercury released.

And before anyone says I offended them, I'm a blond who had a grandma with Alzheimers, as well as a mom and dad!

I don't like the little curly q bulbs. Don't seem as strong and are ugly as homemade sin.

And it is harder and harder to find regular 100 watt bulbs. All I see are the damn 92 watters. Maybe someone showed that 8% didn't matter in the light field, but I can sure notice a difference. Sux.

When I bought me condo last year, every freakin bulb was 52 watt. I didn't even know they made 52 watt bulbs....I was wondering why it was damn dim in the house. Replaced them with 100 and 60w. The last time I bought lights for my celling fan, I noticed the back had a drawing which type of fan outlet they should be used on. When I shot them an email asking WTHey, they said the upright to 90 degree bulbs won't last as long hanging upside down as a specificly designed 91ish-180 degree bulb. Who knew.

For those stating incandescent should go the way fo the dodo,... show me 1 CFL flood style bulb that lasts longer than the incads...

I have a house full of 65W floods in recessed lighting. The original incads only lasted 6 months, but the CFLs only lasted 1.5 months (and this is most brands, GE, Sylvania, Some Chinese company, etc etc).

LED costs too much. To replace all the recessed lighting with recessed LEDs in my house, I am looking at $7000.
