I wonder how many people died in drunk driving accidents between those dates. I don't hear much about outlawing cars, trucks, motorcycles, and alcohol.

That's because those EEE-VILLL automobile, truck motorcycle and alcohol lobbies have so intimidated the media... oh, wait, they don't exist. Neither does the evil pro-gun lobby.

Reality has devolved into infotainment reality. A good nationwide electrical outage of the right duration might be the cure.

Without a return to real people learning from their experiences in the real world, we will see more 26 year old failures living in their mother's basement deciding to become mass shooters. And a growing percent of the population demanding that someone else's rights be taken away so they will feel safer.

You have hit the nail on the head. It goes all the way back to the concept that every kid gets a trophy, protecting kids from getting their feelings hurt, and all forms of political correctness. We are creating a population that does not know how to deal with losing or rejection.

I read an interesting piece that suggested "social currency" was one of the drivers of mass shootings. Basically, this concept is based on the fact that everybody wants to be somebody - wants to be important/famous/notorious, known for being good at something, known as being special in some way, etc. These sadistic murdering cowards (mass shooters) get their social currency (infamy) through enacting heinous scenarios. Take away or diminish their social currency and remove their time-limited safe operating window (GFZs) and they may pursue some other means of gaining this social currency - maybe they will instead videotape their own suicides by some horrific manner instead (and these should be allowed to be posted on you tube so they gain currency from it IMHO). While there is no sure method of preventing these vile acts, it may be possible to reduce them by removing/negating the perceived benefits of perpetrating them especially when combined with hardening currently soft targets. Most of these guys have decided to die when they set out to commit mass murder so eliminating GFZs alone may not have as dramatic an effect unless the social currency is reduced/removed also. Still, if enacted, there will be some who think that if their killings are particularly horrific they will surely be treated differently and thus realize the social currency that drives these crimes.

^^^^This.

Remove the fantasy of power by making it a two way range instead of a turkey shoot. Not quite as appealing for them if they only get a few shots off before they receive return fire. Plus, when a citizen stops one of these shootings early, it all but guarantees that the media will bury the story thus taking away the fame.
