I'm afraid they are Billybob, and most people would agree. I've had my life. A five year old's life is worth more than mine.
We may not want to say it out loud, but everybody knows that's how it is.

I understand that and even agree to an extent. But like many other things I wonder if we've let it go to far. Look at the fact that some have children they know they can't afford to receive benefits. Look at the fact that many children have ipads and every other frill but their grandparents are in poverty or in a home at taxpayers expense. At what $$$ point are the elders to be sacrificed to ensure children can be raised "keeping up with the Jones".

Im not going to speak from a legal or social standpoint but my mother busted her ass for me and my brother so I will make sure she lives out the rest of her days happy.

^^^ +100 on this. My mother will tell you "that was her responsibility for having me and my two sisters", but I can remember her doing without alot of things when I was growing up so that my sisters and I could have what was necessary. I feel like I will return the favor when the time comes.

What about deadbeat parents that never did a thing for their children(Yes, they are out there.). Or the ones who's children were financially cared for by the state. Or the ones who's parents were passed out every night on drugs or alcohol and the child was forced to fend for themselves. If those kids grow up to be successful and thank god many of them do, should they too be held responsible for the parents that never were for them?

Read what I said, folks. I didn't say it's not right to support one's folks; I said I don't approve of somebody sticking a gun in my ribs and saying I have to. Yes, in most cases, there probably ought to be a moral duty, but as far as a legal duty, well, a duty should be adopted by action. Parents took action; kids did not.

So the children should be fined for their parent's poor financial planning?

Here is an example for you. Parents dont save towards retirement in order to send their only child to college with no student loans. That child will have a decent chance for success and it is because the parents sacrificed everything for that kid. Is that poor financial planning? Or is that being a good parent and sacrificing for your child?

WE as 'children of our parents' should do all we can to fend for them if they get to where they can't fend for themselves. Whether it be a nursing home or our home. Best of all, if we can fix their home for 'em to stay. There is a certain comfort factor you can't replace.
