This is encouraging news but the fight continues. You could say that Coburn stood strong or that our calls, letters and e-mails had the desired effect.

President Barack Obama’s gun control agenda is looking more doomed by the day...

...the hopes for any legislation has dimmed on even the most basic measures. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday ended the bipartisan talks on universal background checks with Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and filed his own bill without co-sponsors or the suggestions made by Coburn and Sens. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.). Losing Coburn from the background checks talks increases the likelihood that the only gun control measure that can pass the Senate is on gun trafficking, a far less sweeping proposal than background checks or the doomed bans on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. Schumer, Manchin and Kirk will try to attract other Republicans to replace Coburn in their coalition....

They’ve (the White House) also not said a harsh public word about Coburn, despite the collapse of the talks to produce a bipartisan Senate deal on universal background checks.

“Senator Coburn has shown in some ways that he appreciates the value of background checks,” said Brady Campaign President Dan Gross.

If the top story on politico is about the first lady's clothing, then I would imagine gun control has fallen off the radar for everyone except us. I'm hoping that when these bills finally get killed, we'll see a dump of rifles and ammo back on the market. I guess we have to wait till April. :)

We may never know for sure, but maybe Coburn was closer to the NRA stance of improving our current system instead of increasing it. I did see one story that said his idea of UBC was more a voluntary one which would never fly with the left, they want something with teeth that can be used to punish lawful gun owners. So maybe there was never much of a problem with Coburn and the problem all along has been with the media, the same media that early on that the NRA was supporting UBC.

I heard an opinion that he may have partnered up with Schumer for the express purpose of derailing the UBC. I doubt that but who knows? I'm glad to see that he walked on them though, it puts some perspective on what was being discussed behind closed doors. I'd bet that McCain would be happy to take his place.

Once these bills are deal, I bet the market loosens up a bit but not too much for a while. It will be late fall or so before we see adequate stocks of ammo, etc.

But McCain is pretty much a liberal anyway so it doesn't give conservative democrats and log cabin republicans the cover to vote against the 2A like Coburn would have.

I called his office and spoke to a very nice aide who basically said the anti2As have started keeping Coburn out of the loop because he is opposed to the collection of ANY data on private sales. I expressed my appreciation for Sen. Coburn standing on his principles.

In the area of mental health reporting, Coburn wants to make it easier to report folks into NICs who have been adjudicated to be mentally defective already by a judge. the anti-2As were using this to get him to agree on some "reasonable data collection" from private sales, but it seems he has seen through their subterfuge, thanks in no small part I am sure, to our calls and exhortations.

Please consider calling his office to thank him for sticking to principle, and encourage him to stay the course.

I would love nothing more than to have been wrong about his motives. Hopefully the full story will come out in the end.
