The way public assistance is set up, it only exacerbates poverty. It may help those in need temporarily, but it doesn't give them a way OUT of the cycle of poverty. It merely makes poverty more tolerable.

Overall it's up... these two stats are pretty telling:

- The poverty level in America is currently at around 46 million people or 15%. This has increased every year for the last 3 years and is at it's highest level since 1959 (first year measured).

- One in Seven Americans use Food Stamps (SNAP). All time record high level reported in June 2012.

Thanks HMFIC. That's pretty disturbing. No doubt there's a lot of fraud going on, but even with that taken out of the stats it's still depressing.

Actually the same article those numbers came from stated that fraud was 1% or less. I'm not sure how they can really measure that accurately but it does seem to make the sadness of the situation that much more so.
