I was delayed on a firearm purchase for the first time ever yesterday at Academy. They said they could hold the gun up to thirty days awaiting a response.
If I go to another Academy or pawn shop or wherever and try to make the same purchase elsewhere, will I have the same results until the first delay is resolved?
I don't mind a short wait, but thirty days seems a bit much.

It depends on what caused the delay. If you know there is nothing that would prevent you from ownership, it is very likely that you could indeed go elsewhere and clear on the spot. If you didn’t put your SSN# on the form that is darn near a guaranteed delay.

It is up to the FFL to decide whether to transfer the firearm in 3 business days, or hold the firearm and wait longer for a proceed or deny. I understand that WalMart and Academy policy is to hold the firearm for 30 days on a delay. If the FFL decides to transfer the firearm in 3 business days, he is required to notify the government if he gets a deny after transfer and the ATF will be visiting the recipient. You can either wait the 30 days, or see if they'll refund your money and go see a local FFL.

Considering the number of transfers, delays are common but it's the FFL's discretion to transfer the firearm.

I am delayed 95% of the time. I bought a couple of guns from Academy. All i can say is be on top of them go by there on the third day, and then once a week. I was approved for a gun and they never called me so needless to say close to the 30 day mark I stopped by to which they stated I was approved. The approval was two days after I filled out the paperwork. BTW I always put my SSN#
