If your wanting it to be a semi, I'll give you a kind of price point, ballpark figure type of thing. For what your wanting, the starting price in the .308/7.62x51mm game is gonna be right about $900. That will start you off with a G.I. Spec PTR 91 ( which is iron sights only), or a DPMS sportical AR-10 type of rifle without forward assist, no dust cover, or sights what so ever. It only goes up from there. And rember, this is not going to include your optic, which is going to start at, say, $400ish for a decent magnified type. And not every .30 caliber semi auto lends itself well to putting rounds through the same hole at 300, or even 100 yards. I'm a HUGE fan of FAL style rifles, but they aren't going to put a round up a gnats azz at 400 yards either. If your budget were, say, $3000 ( which god knows isn't most people, I'm lucky if my wife lets me spend $700), then you could look into larue, POF, LMT or Amalite type rifles, or even a FN SCAR. But, if you really wanted into this game ( and I am also), I think your best bet would be to buy a DPMS ( preferably the oracle and not sportical). This would give you the platform on which to start, and you can switch the pieces and modify the rifle to your liking over time as the funds become available. Don't worry about " I've never done XYZ before". There are a great many of us here who have and will gladly share our knowledge. To get a good price point look at the DPMS website, fat boy tactical, and sooner stae pawn web site. And before you buy ANYTHING, my advice is to research the hell out of it and the price! And no RIJAS services!!!!!

And whatever you choose do yourself a favor and dont skimp on the glass....makes all the difference

Agree 100% with this.

Most buyers make the mistake of putting a cheap piece of glass on a rifle and being surprised when everything fails to work as expected.

A $1500-$2000 Nightforce scope has outstanding optical quality, long term reliability, consistent and repeatable windage & elevation clicks, and excellent resale value.
A $200 cheap scope is usually missing all of the above.

Seen it lots of times at the range, a person buys a nice rifle, mounts a cheap scope on it, uses the cheapest bargain ammunition available, then bitches about their piece of crap rifle.

I thought my (cheap)4-16x40 was adequate.. better than my nikon buckmaster 3-9x40..
As i did a side by side daylight to dark and shot for groups the 4-16 won..with tighter groups. clarity was the same.
the 3 power edged out just a little at dark.
I found my scope at 300+ yards gets a little less crisp than i would like.
Lots of mirage that day.

Hunting scope of course..
I thought maybe i should have got that Mueller Eraticator.... then shooting with a buddy at 200+ yards that has the Mueller
I am happier with my 4-16.. as i was searching for the picture with the short eye relief on the Mueller.
and my scope was just as clear..in fact a little more crisp....But i did not mess with anything but focus on his.
both set on same power..

One day i will have a real scope..
Maybe i will put it on my 10fp.
So i will agree with the good glass comments. especially if you plan on plinking far away.

I have to agree with most of what has already been said.

My recommendations, all in .308 WIN:
Bolt gun - Winchester Model 70, Savage 10FP, Remington Model 700 SPS
Semi-Automatic - DPMS Oracle (.308 WIN)

For "Glass" meaning scope, I would recommend something in the 4-12 or 4-16 magnification range. Zeiss comes to mind as a scope that is a good value (what you get for price paid). Other nice scopes are higher end Vortex optics and Sightron.

When you get to looking at scopes, and you start thinking how expensive they are, start looking around at Schmidt & Bender... It'll make it a little easier to pry a cook grand out of your pocket

That or a surgeon rifle. Made in Oklahoma.

Surgeon waits are 6mos to a year, unless you find one of their "ready to ships" that fits your need and budget. Check their page for current inventory.

Jon is ~6mos+/-. And only does customs, he does not have "ready to ship" builds, but you tell him what you want and he can get you a bighorn action in about 8-10wks, while you round up the bbl, stock and trigger.

Either are excellent options. I have two builds from Jon, a 300wm & a 6.5cm, and they are hammers. Jon is as nice of a gent as you ever want to work with.

Like others have said. What's your budget for the rifle and for glass? We have your purpose, but can't really offer advice until we know how much of your money we can spend.
