"When Hitler attacked the Jews, I was not a Jew, therefore, I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the Catholics, I was not a Catholic, and therefore, I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the unions and the industrialists, I was not a member of the unions and I was not concerned. Then, Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church--and there was nobody left to be concerned."

Even though my father is a gun owner, we had the same discussion over Christmas, it started out calm and engaging till my Obama loving sister got in on it. To say the least, the rest of vacation was like walking around on egg shell's. It's the first time my dad had nothing to say, or even said good by when we left. Some folks just can't get past the emotional side of the discussion. Logic never works!

Now my brother is another story. We decided to do a little before Christmas shopping, when I got into his truck I noticed a medium sized backpack in his back seat, and joked about it being a bugout bag, joke was on me as it was just that. He's always leaned more in my direction when it comes to 2AD an firearms. Now he's right on board. Looks like both of us are back to being the "black sheep" of the family. Yes he's also started a stockpile too!!

More frightening than any gun ever made.

Had a similar debate with my stepfather this evening. He is ex military and college professor. He thinks there should be a permenant ban on mags over 10 rounds. I asked why? He said it would slow people down at mass murders. I kinda chuckled a bit and he got bent out of shape real quick. I retorted, if no one besides the goblin has a gun and the goblin carry's 2 pistols with just 2 extra reloads, thats 40 rounds. If the goblin carry's 2 revolvers with 2 extra reloads, 1 per revolver, thats still 24 rounds. No one to stop him or defend themselves, the goblin can reload and keep shooting. Banning hi cap mags or certain fire arms will not curb violence. He dis agreed with me, my mom ended the debate.

I just like to break it down to specifics. It is much easier for the pro-ban side when they use generalities, but much harder with specifics. Like how does a pistol grip make a rifle more dangerous? How many mass bayonettings have there been in the past 100 years? Why ten? Why not five or fifteen or one? And you could always ask them "what makes you think a criminal cares what the law says about magazine size when he is murdering people in a gun free zone?"

As the OP said, you can't argue with stupidity. To which I'll add, you can't argue with emotionally-driven people.

The "let's ban assault weapons" argument is strictly an appeal to emotion, magnified in intensity because of our desire to protect children. The essence of the con is that politicians can protect our children by passing a law.

It's kind of like watching a good sheep dog. The liberals are just herding the sheep.

Not to nit-pick, but if you're going to argue about high-capacity magazines, avoid the use of the word "clip" so you don't dilute your message with incorrect terminology.

Unless you're talking about M1 Garands and the like :)

I had an argument like this with my in-laws. When I pressed the issue of defining an "assault weapon" the argument slowly died. Every thing they tried to use, I was able to show was cosmetic or had no bearing on the functioning. Didn't let them get anywhere until we had defined terms. AR is not assault rifle, it is Armalite, the company that makes them. Gun show loophole is non existent. Nothing legal at a gun show that is not legal anywhere else, any day of the week, in any other location. On and on we went. Several asked where I got my information and why did I know these things. Was able to chastise them by asking, Why do you not know the specifics of what you are talking about? At least it ended well. They are still talking to me, just not about gun control.

Because the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting, target shooting, or self defense.

This says it all, end of arguement.......... Period ! No need to argue about anything else. If people want to push it after being told the above, tell them to go change the Constitution then.

And by the way, No assault rifle was used in Netown. The AR was found in the trunk. 4 handguns were found inside the school. 2 other people were captured, forced to the ground, handcuffed and arrested yet the media won't mention anything more about it. Seem strange to anyone ?
