The core problem here (along with the left's emotionally-driven positions) is the average American's gleeful willingness to deprive others of their rights. You can hear those arguments all day long. If it's a right or a practice or a possession that John Doe personalizes, it should be protected. But if not, then it's okay to deprive others of it. Very infrequently do I hear anyone state that it's a free country and people should be allowed to live freely. Everyone is wrapped up in what 'other people' should be allow to do and to own. People now are very very comfortable in a ruled society where the government dictates what we can do and what we can own.

So, if I'm not an "assault weapon" owner, I should get to decide if you should own one. Even though it has nothing to do with me.

This says it all, end of arguement.......... Period ! No need to argue about anything else. If people want to push it after being told the above, tell them to go change the Constitution then.

And by the way, No assault rifle was used in Netown. The AR was found in the trunk. 4 handguns were found inside the school. 2 other people were captured, forced to the ground, handcuffed and arrested yet the media won't mention anything more about it. Seem strange to anyone ?

You are misinformed and making assumptions. The gun found in the trunk was a shotgun (Saiga IIRC). The AR was used in the school on the victims and was found near Lanza's body. Lanza used one of the pistols on himself. This is from a report issued jointly by the Connecticut Intelligence Center and CT State Police. Before anyone asks, I can't post it. It's marked Law Enforcement Sensitive (LES) and even though I can't find anything LES in the report itself, it is what it is.

Here are some arguements I thought of while on the way home-

Why do cops and infantry need 30-round mags? They train a hell of a lot more than me and when they face their targets, there are usually more of them than the target, so they should only need one bullet per gun, because they shouldn't miss, right?

Because the cops show up on time, everytime right?

When one gets their mind wrapped around this concept, that is when it gets reeeeeeeaaaaaalllllllllllly frustrating for both sides. I've had the below argument more than once with family and friends.

Them: Claiming that LEOs NEED 30round mags an evil AWs (which I agree wholeheartedly) but then they aren't evil AWs when the LEOs (or .mil) have them.

Me: Where does a LEO/MIL NEEDING a 30 round mag come from? It's for their own self defense right?

Them: No $h!t Sherlock...

Me: And just exactly how does his/her NEEDS trump mine when it comes to me defending my life? Our LEOs are just citizens like the rest of us. My next door neighbor told me that and he was in charge of the OHP firearms training at the time. They "get it", why does the general public not "get it"?

It's at this point the argument usually goes south quickly because they know they only have emotion to work with.

Using what criminals utilize or don't utilize as their weapon or weapons of choice as an example is pointless. It doesn't make a bit of difference what Lanza had in his vehicle vs what he actually used. Criminals will use whatever they can get their hands on and it's been proven time and time again that laws don't effectively keep weapons out of the hands of criminals. What you should be talking about is how trained and certified good guys or gals could've effectively neutralized Lanza to minimize his impact. Also, I honestly don't believe the the differentiation between assault and non-assault weapons should be a linchpin either. Last time I checked, the constitution didn't specify what type of arms. We'd be better off educating and arming more good citizens then disarming them period. It has been proven by history. We could argue semantics and weapon cosmetics ad nauseum. The main thing is that an attack on the second amendment is an attack on our right to self defense and not just guns. First guns, then knives, then what?

I haven't seen an arrest report on 2 other people from this event. Are you sure they weren't simply detained pending investigation and subsequently released? When responding to an active shooter, everyone is considered a threat until deemed otherwise. If you're in the question mark zone, you may get proned out and cuffed till they can sort it out later. This is why I teach citizens to evac with empty open hands, palms forward and shed bulky jackets to avoid looking like a possible threat.
