I just bought a new truck. Went to the tag agency today to pay the taxes, registration, etc. One charge was $12.50 for tire recycling. It's a new truck. Why am I paying for tire recycling at the tag agency?

That's weird. $12.50 isn't even a number evenly divisible by four. Maybe they're counting the spare. That would be $2.50 per tire.

Speaking of, if I stupidly saved two sets of tires and now want to get rid of them, how do I do that? Just drop them off at a tire dealer? I mean, I've already paid the disposal fee, right?

Even if you want to keep the old tires for a utility trailer or child's swing they'll charge the recycling fee.

The fee is collected at the initial sale of the tire. Since it is a new vehicle, the do it at registration. Yes, they collect for the spare also. As for the cost, it depends on the size of the tire. I remember there were 3 price points. $1, $2.50, $3.50. 20" and up were $3.50, 15" were $1. I think 17" is where it changed to $2.50. I used to have to setup a point of sale system for the rates and remit payment to the tax commission.

Many tire dealers will take them since the are not charged to pick them up.

about 12 years ago my buddy stated it is law the tire dealers must take the old tires you have .. even if you did not purchase tires from them.
I never looked into it but he would quote the law to wal-mart and leave his tires.
