I don't know about the law in that state but in Oklahoma anything under 25 pounds is a misdemeanor. unless they can prove you are dealing. Marijuana cause loss in judgement, so it is possible that if a parent was "High" enough they might offer the drug to a child, of what if they got so "High" they dropped the joint and burned the house down? I completely agree with taking the child away from the parents

If they did that then I would support having the kids taken away, especially if the kid was 11. However, pot doesn't magically turn you into a totally different person and remove all sense of responsibility. If you think it does, you've been getting too much of your information from Reefer Madness.

Alcohol causes losses in judgment too. Do you smoke cigarettes when you drink? I sure do. However, while someone who's drunk around their kids (and smoking cigarettes in the house) sure won't win Mother/Father of the Year, they won't have their children taken away.

I haven't touched any illegal drugs in quite a long time, but I will tell you right now that, by far, the dumbest and most dangerous sh*t I've ever done was fueled by Wild Turkey and Pall Malls.

I did not mean take the kid away forever, but there needs and will be an investigation. from the little info. that was on this article, it said that he brought marijuana cigarettes to school, it does not go in to say that they are or are not dealers, or even trafficers. But temporarily taking the child away until a thorough investigation is performed is the right thing to do. If it comes back that the parents just smoke a little weed from time to time, give them a fine and slap them on the wrist and give them their son back.
And I am sure DHS will continue to monitor the parents

OK...so you are a recovering drug addict, a drunk (and you smoke devil sticks)......hmmm, sounds like expert advice to me!!!! :drunk: I kid, I kid!!!! Someone has to throw gas on this fire!!!

I know you're kidding but this is how these debates tend to go. One side says the parents are blameless because POT SHOULD TOTALLY BE LEGAL BRO. The other says the parents should be legally barred from seeing their children because THEY COMMITTED A CRIME IN FRONT OF THEIR KIDS. Anyone in the middle gets called a Cross-burning Paleoconservative Fascist by the first group and a Bong-Building oBama Buddy by the second group.

I'm curious to hear how you feel the children were mistreated.

Smoking weed in front of your kids is about as irresponsible as being drunk in front of your kids, but they shouldn't be taken away by the state just because of that. That would be like taking the kids away from someone who has 5 beers or so on a Saturday night, except the beer just makes you giggle and eat marshmallows. Not everyone smokes until completely whited out, just like not everyone drinks to get schnammered.

I'm going to preempt anyone saying "BUT ZOMG POT IS ILLEGAL" by saying that these guys were charged with misdemeanor possession. They weren't dealing or growing. This is like some family during Prohibition having a bottle of Jack Daniels in the cupboard.

Seriously?? Man ... I got nothing. I lived a care-free, often times immoral, sometimes illegal life BEFORE I had my children ... All that stopped the second I had my first child. (And yeah, if you have kids in the house 5 beers at a time is about 4 too many in my opinion.) I am not saying the temptation to get snockered was not there ... but THE KIDS COME FIRST ...

Kids are a lot smarter than their parents most of the time (and always smarter than their parents give them credit for) ... This 11 year old is a prime example of that.

However, like all things in life, YMMV.

I'll give the Whitey rundown:

1.) Parents broke the law. There is no logical argument against the fact they broke the law.
2.) Another example of how taxes are going to be used on what is a battle that cannot be won.
3.) I somewhat agree with the removal of the kids. If you are going to partake in a controlled substance, you need to ensure your kids don't have access to it. (alcohol, drugs, etc). If your kids can get to it, that's negligence.
4.) Even if legalized (which I think it should be), I would still see this as a crime.

Could not agree more.

Pot heads: Quit whining how its just a plant and it should be legal, I understand , but the fact is, it IS illegal. You want to smoke it so bad, fight to change laws!

LOL. Yeah, just goes to show that common sense isn't always so common. :)

Ya know, raising kids goes way beyond the scope of what has happened here.
I'm no expert as only raising two, but there were highs and lows. I can't think of any family group, no matter what their economic situation that doesn't have issues with their kids.
I'm sure that some of you have had 4.0's all of their lives, but that is the exception, not the rule.
Be the best parent you can, but kids still have their own minds.
They are a product of the people they choose to be their friends, as they mature.
I told my kids, and now my grand kids that if you want to be trash....hang out with trash.
If you want to be a success in life, hang out with the people that are successful and want to succeed in life.

It amazing how many kids now want to emulate the PO' Gangsta with jail time in their backgrounds, but they think that is COOL??

I'm still lost on this one.

Alright that's fair. I think a grow-op/distribution center would have been pretty easy to spot when the cops searched the place though.

Where are the "we don't have all the facts" and "wait for both sides of the story" people?

Does that standard not apply to marijuana cases? It's been 3 pages, they would have been in on 1 of a shooting story.

We should just hang 'em by a hemp rope (for irony) on the courthouse lawn in front of their kids. It's the only way they'll ever learn.
