It's not 9mm? Looks like Federal Cartridge headstamp, when I hold a 9mm in my hands it looks like roughly the same proportions.

Yep you got it right. Measure the Bullet diameter below the ogive and the cartridge over all length. If it is .355 dia and 1.1” long you pretty much have a 9mm.

I’ll grab it from him tomorrow and put some calipers on it. I was thinking 9mm but I don’t own one to compare it to.
