FYI you can always ID an Elm by looking at the base of the leaf’s blade as it meets the petiole (leaf stem). It’s always uneven

Those things are hard to kill. We had one in the flower bed when I was a kid; it wasn't as big around as that one, but we couldn't pull it out with a tractor. Stripped all the limbs and bark off of it, and tore the top few feet off, but the dang thing wouldn't turn loose (I swear I heard some guy yelling in Chinese while we were pulling on it) and wouldn't die. It kept coming back, and was still there when my folks sold the house...

Drill multiple holes in the stump and fill 'em with salt, then with vinegar. Works really well.

I can vouch for this, it works, Or you could saturate the stump with charcoal lighter fluid and burn the darn thing to death. Of course, there's always that little issue about burning down the house too...
