Where did the idea of retiring at age 62 and living off the gov come from

Here's a plan: Don't pay anything out to people that haven't paid anything in, unless they are collecting survivor benefits as the surviving spouse or a minor child of a deceased payor. How about we incent people to get off their dead asses and do a little something to provide for their own upkeep instead of incenting them into depending on the people who work to take care of them instead?

While we're at it: How about we quit rewarding people for having children when they have no means to support them other than government assistance? I hear octo-slut is back on welfare? I think I read she was getting $2800+ a month. Really? She has no husband and 14 children, and no job. What ITH did people think was going to happen? Ya' know, she is most likely too dim witted to have understood fully what she was doing, and it hasn't worked out all that well for her. The public turned on her, and rightfully so, but I wish the doctor that enabled her would lose his license to practice medicine. He was supposed to be the last measure of defense for his patient, and he failed her, himself and everyone else. She deserves our tax money like she needs 14 kids. Someone should have taken the time to explain to her it was a uterus, not a clown car.

WTF!!! I am 62, draw SS + 2 other retirements and interest from investments. Am I an enemy of the people for working hard and playing by the rules? And what kind of preacher would even be talking about **** like that?:screwy:

Exactly what I was thinking Cedar Creek. Our preacher gave a sermon on Jesus Christ this past Sunday, not SS..

If having people work longer is such a great idea, how about we get the government to stop discouraging it?

f you are under full retirement age for the entire year:
You can earn $14,640 gross wages or net self-employment a year and not lose any benefits in 2012.
We will deduct $1 in benefits for every $2 earned above $14,640.
In the year you reach full retirement age:

You can earn $38,880 gross wages or net self-employment prior to the month you reach full retirement age and not lose any benefits in 2012.
We will deduct $1 in benefits for every $3 earned above $38,880.

I agree completely. I retired at 63 with social security, two pensions and a 401(k). I would have been happy if the feral government had just given me back the money they took from me for SS. With compound interest and in the form of gold bars of course.

...who got the impression that you should be able to retire, that we were "entitled" to retire and most likely bring in more than you paid in during your younger years.

It's not an impression. It's a promise and a guarantee on that promise. When you're forced to hand over your money to the program you're "entitled" to a return on that promise which was guaranteed. And that bit about getting more money back than what you paid in is nonsense. I have no doubt your pastor would or will gladly accept his/her SS money if and when it's available. And if that's so, he will instantly become a hypocrite.
