No,but the BB,a slang name btw,had a greater rate of fire,3 rounds in 43 seconds,so it was closer to a battle rifle.Besides,the Charleville was a French weapon so it can't be taken very seriously.
I guess the Charleville and Brown Bess are what you would call battle muskets, since they are smoothbores.
As for the first rifle that was actually used in battle on any widespread level? I dunno, the Springfield 1855 Rifled Musket maybe?
True, but if you use their designation, so is the FAL - at least to the Germans. The Germans did designate it as a "sturmgewehr" (Stg58).
The Belgians developed the FAL. It amuses me that the Belgians wouldn't license Germany to build FALs.
