Gotta a "B" in military history huh!! The Charleville beat the Brown Bess as a standardized issue item by 5 years!!

No,but the BB,a slang name btw,had a greater rate of fire,3 rounds in 43 seconds,so it was closer to a battle rifle.Besides, the Charleville was a French weapon so it can't be taken very seriously.:rotflmao:

Worked well for Napoleon till he tried to take on the Russians. To tough for adolf that he didn't remember that.

I guess the Charleville and Brown Bess are what you would call battle muskets, since they are smoothbores. ;)

As for the first rifle that was actually used in battle on any widespread level? I dunno, the Springfield 1855 Rifled Musket maybe?

Though they don't fit my definition of "battle rifle" the kalashnikov is what I chose. Maybe its because its what I feel most comfortable with. Light, fast handling and very reliable.

Very true, even though it had the maynard percussion system at the begining. Great rifle that later would become the 1861 Springfield.
