Determining your budget is just one part of the equation. What role you intend this rifle to perform is the more important question. Until you share that with the group then you will get opinions that may have no bearing on the intended use, or you might be steered toward a weapon that may not perform to your expectations.

Right now I'm looking at the S&W M&P 15 for around $600. I've also found a Del Ton for $670. However, if my budget went up to say $800 what is a good AR to look at?

5.56 btw, if that makes a difference.

For a good rifle at a budget price I'd follow the advice from the others here to get parts or a complete upper from Fat Boy. But, extending the budget to $800 I'd build the lower and look at a BCM upper and BCG. I think they've gone up since I bought mine but you could build a nice rifle in that price range.

The great thing about AR 15s is the endless possibilities. Have fun.

I will say this, and it is going to be applicable regardless. Get the best barrel and BCG you can afford. They are the heart of the weapon and going cheap will be detrimental to its performance. Even if you dont intend to use this rifle as a self defense piece of kit, having a quality barrel and BCG is important.

Knowing what specs make a good barrel and BCG will get you farther than brand association, even considering some brands offer excellent products like BCM, Daniel Defense, FN, Colt etc.

I don't personally know what FBT uses to build their rifles nor do I have any experience with their uppers, so I really can't comment on that.

I do know that PSA uses a chrome lined 1-7 twist barrel. I shoot 77 grn bullets so the 1-7 twist barrel is a must. Their 'premium' BCG's feature a Carpenter 158 bolt that is MPI/HPT tested. The carrier is chrome lined and properly staked. You can get this combo for $429, a small price to pay for features that to me at least, are important. For the average AR owner, these may or may not matter. :thumbup3:

The JSE uppers that we sell are nitrided barrels packaged with bolt carrier groups that are properly staked, chrome lined and the bolts are Carpenter 158 and MPI/HPT tested. All bolt carriers that we carry and sell for 5.56 are manufactured by Advance Ordnance and feature all of the characteristics named above. We also stock a variety of quality barrels manufactured by Wilson Arms, Black Hole Weaponry, FN and Mossberg.

ETA: Unlike PSA we understand the consumer's desire to receive their order in a timely manner, if we advertise something for sale, we have it in stock and ready to ship, we aren't in the business of holding your money for several weeks while we purchase the parts to build the product that you purchased.

Thank you for posting your rifles' specs. That should further help customers make informed decisions. That's why I did not want to comment on your uppers because I simply didn't know.

I really like nitrided barrels and am glad they are catching on... I just wish more people made them in 16" midlength pencil profile with 1/8 twist or faster. Until then good old mil spec chrome lined will get the job done just fine I suppose. PSA has a "Modified A2" profile middy right now for a great price ($270), but I think I will hold out for a true pencil profile for my next build. If I wanted it bad enough I would just plunk down for a BCM... but it is just a matter of time until PSA puts one on sale again. I can wait.
