Texting while driving laws tell people to not put others at risk. Seat belt laws not so much. I don't care if someone wants to hurt his or her self. That's his/her business. I do take exception when people are cavalier enough to risk the safety of others though.

I guess some folks just like being governed more than I do.

Maybe we can outlaw sleep - deprived driving, driving with noisy kids in the car, driving while focusing on Rush Limbaugh on the radio, these kinds of things could put others at risk, you know.

I'm just saying the whole "let me do what I want and make it others responsibility to not get hurt by it" argument is dumb. I get the whole individual liberty thing and it's great. It's NOT great when it isn't restrained by the rights of others. I shouldn't HAVE to have my head on a swivel because someone wants to be stupid behind the wheel and call it liberty.

that's where context comes in...laws are only for punishment...words on a piece of paper will not stop someone from doing what they want anyway...it would be like passing a law that fire ants can't sting you and then putting your bare foot near a pile.

Oh of course all things create the same degree of risk. Are you actually suggesting that texting while driving creates the same risk to others as listening to the radio? What a reach. And yes, some of us think more of their fellow man (enough to not intentionally risk their lives) than others.

Except that some people actually care about the law and follow it. It's a crazy concept.

The ony time I text when driving is to let someone know that Im driving and I cant text right now... but I pull over some where to do that.

My phones are usually connected to my vehicles Bluetooth. For the music I have on them, I set my Spotify playlists on random then close it up and put it in the seat and dont touch it until Im stopped.

My kid flipped one of my trucks this past Xmas Eve by jacking around trying to find a song on his phone and he ended up going off the side of the road and flipped it on its side. For some reason he thought that wasnt as bad as texting- doh, he took his eyes off the road, its as bad. Gladly it was late at night on a deserted road out in the country near our place and no one got hurt, but it could have been on 51 during the daytime in traffic. Hopefully he learned something from it all besides costing his college trust some money fixing up the truck.
