I can't believe the amount of misinformation and straight up FUDD in this thread. :disappoin

Here is a NO vote. Humans are, already, supposed to be the smartest critters in the woods. And, there are other ways to protect your hearing. If you need multipal shots, spend the $200 tax on ammo and practice.

Have you ever heard a suppressed rifle fired in person? They still have a 150dB sonic crack that travels with the bullet. Pulling targets on the 600 yard range at the gun club, you hardly ever hear the gun shot, but the crack from the bullet makes ear pro mandatory. It is insanely loud. That is what the animals in the woods are hearing, not the gun shot.

Also, there is no way currently to protect your hearing from impulse sounds generated by gun shots and still maintain 100% natural hearing ability that I know of other than suppressors. The electronic muffs are good, but not that good.

Here is a video of the camera down range of a 1000 yard shooter. You can hear the SS crack and the gun shot, a suppressor will only take care of the very diminished gun shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDQW9BYowmg

To bad they don't make suppressors for shotguns since that would probably be the main hunting gun where a person would take multiple shots.

They do make silencers for shotguns....

I'm really not sure what point you are trying to make.First of all I don't want to be on the receiving end of someone elses muzzle as the example you give of being down range.Secondly we are talking about using a suppressor for a hunting situation not target shooting. In nearly all hunting situations people are not going to be shooting at the ranges you stated. I have several friends that use them to hunt with in other states and they all tell me the report is next to nothing.I'm not trying to argue about it but just want clarification on how much they would help me in a hunting situation. I don't want to be misinformed as I have never used one either. They would have to be better than nothing.

What do you mean you're not sure what point I'm trying to make?

First of all, being in the pit on a range like the high power range is completely safe.

Secondly, it doesn't matter what distances you're shooting there is still a 150dB sonic boom that travels with the bullet.

Thirdly, your friends telling you "The report is next to nothing" means nothing.

In actuality, the report at the shooter's ear is around 130-140dB on a suppressed centerfire rifle. That's loud. According to OSHA the exposure limit for impulse noise is 140dB. A suppressor offers no advantage to the hunter over the game while maintaining safety to the shooters hearing.

Here is a video of 338LM being knocked down to below 130dB. Notice the sonic crack that travels down range. This will alert any game that isn't completely deaf and allows the shooter to hear naturally and safely.

while stationed in germany, found out it is considered rude to not use something to suppress the noise. I think we are too damn liberal giving away our rights to begin with. I think if you have a tax stamp you should be able to use it how you want. I suppose no one has really made a push or even an argument to why this law is archaic and should be repealed. We are too busy defending all the other gun related regulations.

A suppressor/sub-sonic ammo combo is void of any significant db level. Anyone wanting to save their ears can benefit from a suppressor and my personal experience with sub-ammo is shot placement equals kill.

Incorrect. Look at the video in my last post. They shoot subsonic .308 through a very nice can and it still meters 126dB. The full power .338LM only registers 127-128dB through a .338 can.

A 168gr .308 sub sonic has a power factor of 176. I wouldn't feel comfortable taking anything larger than a coyote with one. A bullet will most likely have poor terminal performance in a larger animal like a deer. I just wouldn't trust it.
